    EOtech 512 advice needed!

    AR.jpgAR2.jpg
So i'm looking to get a new sight instead of the red dot i currently have. I think I've landed on the EOtech 512. I still have a fixed standard front sight on my rifle and i'm not sure if that will be in the way of my EOtech or not. Any advice on what my options are? Plus any feedback on the EOtech would be great too. The reviews I've read have all been good so far but i would like to know what you guys have to say.

You may want to do a little more reading. I had good luck with my 512 but I didn't run it very hard or for very long. The AA Eotechs don't have the greatest reputation. If you do decide to go with the 512 mount it up and see how you like it before doing anything with your front sight. I used to have fixed front and rear sights with my personal 512, then very briefly flip down front and rear before I sold my 512. I currently have fixed front and flip down rear with my work rifle's 552 (no choice in the matter) and I have flip down front and rear with my EXPS2.

The EXPS2 has a lower 1/3 cowitness so it would have been fine with fixed sights, but I also have a magnifier so that wouldn't have worked with the rear. The lower 1/3 cowitness is my favorite set up of the three by far. With the absolute cowitness on the 552 or 512 the flip down rear is nice but I personally don't feel that the fixed front is a problem, if you're doing it right you end up looking past it. Your results may vary. I didn't love the fixed front and rear with the absolute cowitness Eotech. It was workable but I felt like I was limiting myself to only using the top half of the Eotech's window.

If you do end up finding that you feel like the front sight is a hindrance you could always pick up a LaRue mount and get a lower 1/3 cowitness that way but by then you're in the EXPS2 price range anyway. I would, and did get the EXPS2.

I personally like to steer away from the 512 as well. The XPS series are much improved over the 5 series. Another option that many including myself will recommend is the Aimpoint Pro. I personally think it's the best value out there, and is priced close to what 512's are found for, but with a 3 year battery life and is almost bullet proof.

I have a 512 on my work gun which has a fixed front site like you. You won't notice it when using the red dot. Just trust the dot once you've got it zeroed. Don't worry about lining the dot up with the front sight post.

I have a 552 on a carbine that still has the front sight post and an arms 40L rear sight. I never really notice the front sight post. I tend to shoot with both eyes open and focused on the target. My right eye picks up the dot and superimposes it on the target. Takes some practice to get the focus right and get your brain to make it work.

^^^This^^^ if you are sold on the Eotech. We have a mix of 200 plus 552 and 512's. I have sent at least 10 back to L-3 in the past few years. They do have a fast turn around for repair. I check every sight on the line before quals start and I still have to carry spare batteries in my pocket on the range. Damn I get tired of officers throwing away batteries with the rubber grommet stuck to the bottom of them. I do not care for the AA battery versions. David

I was focused on the front sight post issue on my last post but I should have mentioned: I only have the 552 because a friend bought two and decided he didn't want the second one so I got a great deal on it. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. I don't have anything else that takes AAs, all my lights use 123As, but at the time the only option for the Eotech was AA or N. It makes way more sense to stick to one type of battery.

First, check the battery box and look for an "f" marking. That is the new box that is more reliable. If it does not follow Defoor's advice here http://www.kyledefoor.com/2009/12/mo...ch-secret.html

Second, the Larue Tactical riser will help get the optic up where you want it.

Third, enjoy the optic. I upgraded to the XPS series from a 512 and recently conducted a test on the EXPS3, which I found to perform the same as my XPS on the Larue mount.
