It's why I have a difficult time taking any of the scores of "deals" out there in the market seriously.

The only way I can know for sure that a carrier key is installed correctly is if I do it myself. That said, I have had excellent results with:

    * Colt BCG's dating back to the early 1960's even.
    * BCM BCG's and stripped carriers with key only

I personally have come to the conclusion long ago that I will only buy BCG's from trusted sources, and the list is way shorter than it was 5 years ago, while the market has expanded.

The companies with varying vendor sources that are all over the map need to be vetted with each purchase, and the only way to do that is break it down, which might be unnecessary if it was done right. There's just no way of knowing. This is where the company culture really comes into play, and there are some who simply hold themselves to an extremely high standard, while others focus more on volume sales.

This is where it pays off to be an informed customer, and why I like this site.

Check to see if you have the black donut o ring on your extractor spring. Remove and inspect. Reassemble without it and see if the extractor functions any different. A lot of guys even run their bolt without it.

The O-Ring was only used back before Colt got their new HD spring past military testing. If your BCG comes with an O-Ring you need a better extractor spring, there should be no reason to need them now days with all the HD springs on the market. Especially since you can get Colt ones most places now.

I agree but the fact is that there are many bcg manufactures that use them currently. Not sure about the AIM one that the OP has but I just bought two from Primary Arms (DS bcg) that had them.

But yeah HD springs can be had for a few bucks and are some of the most overlooked upgrades

Not long ago I asked the question on another forum as to whether people upgrade their extractor spring as a routine upgrade or whether they only do it if they're having extractor issues. Most people responded that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've installed BCM upgraded springs on a couple of my bolts in the past but only after I started having a problem. I currently have a couple springs on hand and I have a couple of new bolts. Whst does everybody here think about replacing them pre-emptively? Both come with the O-ring installed, but I don't use them when I install upgraded springs.

He stated that his carrier key was loose and was sending it back.

It's not a bad idea, especially with BCM's springs. They are 5 coil and Chrome silicon. It is one part you know will be reliable. So many times people have a newish carbean and come to me with "Its not extracting..." I throw a BCM in it and they are good to go. I have seen quite a few newish "standard springs" with blue and black inserts struggle/fail.
