Slap that thing on a .22lr gun.
I did some airsofting and occasionally still do. I can spot a fake real quick and this for sure is one.
The biggest indicator is the size of the glass compare to the frame around it. The thick outer-frames are the biggest give away:
Real Eotechs have a much slimmer frame/bigger glass. Not to mention that the logo looks like it's using the wrong font and the switches are raised higher than the original.

For those looking at this, the QD latch is a good indication as well. One of the reasons I felt more comfortable buying my EXPS2 on an EE was that I couldn't find an indistinguishable copy anywhere. Not sure if I wasn't looking hard enough but all of the very real looking fakes seemed to all be replica EXPS3s or 5 series. Glad you didn't pay anything, as soon as I saw the picture I felt sick for you.
the logo is a dead give away IMO. at least you didn't get burned. There is a pdf on the Eotech web site about recognizing imitations.
It's like a game of "what's wrong with this picture". I think I've counted at least 5 errors with this so far & there's likely more.
The pics are pretty dark, especially when viewing on a phone. There also doesn't appear to be a hole drilled for the battery cap retention wire.
I wonder if the friend knew it was a fake, hence the free giveaway.
