    Hydro dip or cerakote

    Hi,
I was curious if anyone with experience with both hydro and cerakote can chime in. I have a carbine that's cerakoted and I'm very happy with the durability and how helps keep the inside of the receiver a little slippery and fairly easy to keep clean
I have a new rifle I want to get coated so I'm wondering to cerakote or dip

Does a hydro dip have the same qualities? Or is it basically a graphic with a clear coat that's not as durable as cerakote.

    Thanks so much
    Scott

It's only as durable as the clear coat over it, preferably duracoat or cerakote. IME, cerakote clear has more sheen than the duracoat clear, but should last longer. I go over it with Krylon matte to dull it down.

I agree with Hump... I have stripped hydro and replaced with cerakote many times...Hydro dip seems to hold up decent until a gun starts getting real hard use{think hardcore duck hunting} and while cerakote can also be damaged, it is a very hardy coating for most substrates.

+1 for the Cerakote. Hydro can break down with something as simple as locktite leaking out of you accessories you used it on. Hydro comes off with brake cleaner and other chems. Strips easily. Cerakote is just plain tough. Go with it.

I've been thinking about having my AR Ceracoted.

Can it be done without disassembling the upper? My flash hider is pinned. I just want the whole thing sprayed one color.

    Hydro dip or cerakote

My experience has been the opposite. I have a shotgun that was hydro dipped and has held up great to hard use. The colors darkened/discolored in the places you touch. Must be something about body oil.

I also have an AR lower that was cerakoted and has help up about as well as spray paint. I'm really dissapointed in it.

Based on what other people have said about cerakote I think it was just not applied properly on my lower.
