My real concern is the fact that this contract will go to the lowest bidder. We all know how great cheap free float systems work, and I would hate to see Marines having to deal with that for the next decade.

That pic MR556 (or MR223) barrel, that is heaviest barrel used by HK. It has 25mm (1") under handguard. M27 uses same barrel as standard HK416D165RS - it is around 21-22mm under handguard. Look at vicious_cb pic of real M27 barrel.

If they use the Army rail test (as with FRAK), there is little to worry about regarding robustness.

The caged handguard systems aka free floating that were under evaluation were of quality manufacture. Everyone would recognize their names; but the one variable was still if the ability to affix a bayonet was valid requirement

I swear that looks like the profile of my 416 barrel under the handguards; it's roughly a Colt SOCOM profile. It's not a full inch like the MR556 though. Whatever the last code is before nthey switched to the thinner M4 profile under the handguards is what my upper is (2005 so that should tell the code, which I don't remember off the top of my head).

On this image barrel is very visible thicker than gas block round part. That is how MR barrel looks like. HK416/M27 barrel is around same size as round part of gas block.

BTT I have some problem with topic title. Upgrading rifle will not make it any "deadlier" than it is now. It might make Marine using this rifle become "deadlier". Semantic, I know.

    Interesting timing from Surefire.

Looks like it is right up the design alley.

If we were all at a pub I'd have to buy you all a round just to keep you talking.

Truly an invaluable source of knowledge you guys are. I, personally, appreciate being able to read from you guys by the minute in real time discussion.
