    Anti seize for barrel nut?

When installing a barrel on a new upper would anti seize be effective to prevent the barrel nut from locking into the receiver? I've read that some sort of grease or lube should be used and I already have the anti seize left over from a past engine build. I'm thinking if it prevents manifold bolts from seizing into their engine block holes at the temps an engine can get to it should work on the barrel nut/upper threads as well. Am I correct in this?

It's been discussed here a few times. Despite others stating that you must use the Aeroshell grease listed in the TDP, antiseize will work just fine too.

I use anti-seize on barrel nuts. Perfectly fine for this.

In reality if you don't swim with your rifle it probably makes no difference what you use. Having said that I would not use anti-seize with metal in it. The grease serves two purposes. Lubricating the threads during assembly and preventing electrolysis between the dissimilar metals.

I have been using Loctite C5-A copper based anti-seize for close to 10 years. Guns haven't exploded or disappeared into the atmosphere.

This. At this price, no reason to use anything else.

Other than the fact that I have 1/2 a bottle of permatex anti seize in the shed.

Conventional wisdom generally spec's molybdenum grease for the barrel nut, but lithium grease should be just fine. I had always used NeverSeez without a problem but a few years ago I was told that it contained copper which could enhance galvanic corrosion when used on dissimilar metals. I seriously doubt that it makes any practical difference, but since then I've only used Permatex Anti-Sieze, since the whole point of the coating is to keep the barrel nut from galling to the receiver. In a fresh-water firearms application, I doubt it matters much whether you use lithium, moly, or anti-sieze, with or without copper, graphite, or aluminum.

There's a lot of dogma surrounding lubricants, no matter what type or use. Everybody's always pretty invested in using what their pappy told 'em.
