It's different for everyone, but I never heard anyone say "gee, I have too much ammo". That said, ammo gets EXPENSIVE, and quickly. So I have a few ammo cans stored away for a rainy day, I replace what I shoot, and I stockpile extra ahead of classes, competitions, and elections. My personal minimum is 1000 rounds per AR, and 500 per pistol or bolt/lever rifle. It seems to be a good amount to have in storage as insurance against the buying panics that happen with depressing regularity. But for someone else, that minimum amount might not be nearly enough.

Well... I have like 9 ARs, and I keep like 5 or 6 thousand rounds. Pistol ammo makes no sense to stock pile to me.... If it gets THAT bad, I'm not slaying bodies with a pistol.

^^^You mean it's not like that in real life? There went my whole post-apocalyptic survival strategy...

Rather than a raw round count, I'd be more interested in hearing about the proportions in which you're stocking pistol:rifle:shotgun ammo, and how you arrived at those figures. Do they reflect your current reality, or something else?

I shoot, carry, and have available a HG far more than any other system. I am far more likely to employ a HG for a serious purpose, even in a professional capacity. My HG skills require more upkeep than others. I can travel to and within more places with a HG than any other. Accordingly, my training time, ammunition, and support items reflect that.

Time and resource investment in rifles/carbines is 10-20% of that. If that. Shotgun is minimal anymore.

The calamity most are likely to find themselves in are market shortages limiting resupply. In the event of some fantastical "SHTF"/disaster scenario, the quantity of any one type required, or that could be reasonably carried, redistributed, or repositioned elsewhere is small. Specialty units going out to intentionally engage well armed hostile forces carry basic loads that are also quite small.

What are you doing, and why?

I try and keep about 2,000 rounds of 555/223, and 1000 each of 9mm and 40. I would feel comfortable with 5,000 each.

Jeebus, 10,000 rounds of 5.56??? I am with others that have said you probably wont make it alive to the last round. I figure I will fight as best as I can with what I have if that's even going to be necessary. My kids come first, but without me, they are too small to survive. Like I said, I will fight if need be as best I can with what I have, after that, what else is there? I reload, I have some for a rainy day. I am not planning on surviving firefight after firefight with the invading marauders coming into my neighborhood or the nightmare neighbors already here. I need to be a happy person in my life and not worry about an exact load out or plan. Just my .02

Disclosed on a need to know basis only. Suffice it to say that I keep enough to manage and not get caught short when I want to go shooting during a panic or whatever happens next politically.

I'm not preparing for any conflagration, as any of the scenario's people like to prepare for are not very likely in my lifetime.

I'd rather not post raw numbers, but I tend to keep a higher ratio of 9 mm when compared to 223/556. We shoot lots more 9 than anything else (Mrs CatSnipah and myself).

If I had to ballpark it, probably 2.25:1.

Ratio also holds for 9 vs 762x39. Might even be 2.5:1.
