Look at the first picture where he used a drill, free hand to do something to a full length AR upper? Milling machine and drill press? don't need them

Riots are like sports, it's better to watch it on TV at home.
Sort of an object lesson there, wouldn't you say?
Seems to me he was trying to repair the rifle described in the article. I would also assume it is the rifle shown in the bottom picture.
For lack of better tools it seems he used a drill to take away mutilated aluminum in the upper? I would imagine based on that last photo the upper had damaged aluminum protruding into the bolt area preventing function.
Not sure that I would fire that rifle unless I had no other choice.
Would love to see the other side of this rifle, especially if it is the one he is working on with the drill.
Here is some reporting that is longer and has more pictures.

BOOM: Found it.
He pulls out a drill with a grinding attachment and starts to smooth away the rough burrs — to make the weapon serviceable. The drill whines as he concentrates on the task at hand.

In America people complain about a blemish in the finish or worry about color matching. A little different than a hole blode into the side of your upper.

If that rifle was in the area of a direct hit.... I would assume that was some kind of hot projectile that melted through the side? Does it look like a penetration or melting?

No dude is going to get shot in the chest at 300 yards and look down and say "What is that, a 3 MOA group?"
