in previous times, the lower end ar's owned their price point. When that delton is half the money of a colt, there is a reason for that.
Now in today's market, there isn't any reason not to by Top quality unit. Colts complete in the 900 range. Stripped model Colts in the sevens. Bcm uppers of your flavor in the seven range with kmr tubes? Come on. There isn't any good reason not to.
But what happens at the lgs and all, trying to see how many dpms units can roam the earth. A long time friend wants to get into ar's. Long time shooter also. Fancied colt a4, but the dealer wanted to send him home with a dpms stainless hunting 20-24 in rifle of some sort. Said it was as good as the colt. So he calls and asked me. I thought for a second what analogy would fit. This guy is a farmer, so I said it's sort of like new holland vs john deere.......colt being the john deere.. He reply was "ah, I've heard all I need to know."
I know of quite a few BM's that have been reliable (some of the mods have had good luck with them). Hell, I own a BM M17 and it runs! With that said, BM does not follow the TDP (which I consider the bedrock in which one starts to build a duty ready weapon). If they meet your needs, drive on!

Alright, with the risk of further confirming my ignorance..
The DPMS ramps look like they're too large or too close together, leaving less material for the bolt lug to lock onto. The angles of the ramps look different too.. On the colt, they seem better aimed towards the center of the chamber.

The part that says so much to me is people who want to defend shrubmaster/windham guns already own them…
Feeling the need to validate your purchase is a very human thing, as is not wanting to admit to ones self and others that you could have bought better, and probably for similar money.
The people to listen to are the ones that are not trying to have their purchases validated. While I own one Colt, I am not trying to validate my purchase. I am honest with myself on it, it is a base gun of quality I am not willing to go under, it's the lowest quality AR I would purchase. I bought it because at 799$, I couldn't pass it up.
The guns I run in classes, and would use in defense situations are guns I built and I think have a higher quality that a basic colt. They have better parts like FF rails, Geissele triggers, CHF barrels ect. They are also tailored to me specifically. For some one trying to get into the AR world I don't suggest building with out guidance from an experienced builder. I do suggest a colt as a base entry level AR, to me a Colt is 'good enough' not 'the greatest', nor do I consider it 'as good as' some of the higher end ARs like KAC, or Larue. For someone wanting more options BCM seems great, I don't think they are better than Colt as they don't seem to try to be, they do have more options and are 'as good as' a colt.
