Feeling the need to validate your purchase is a very human thing, as is not wanting to admit to ones self and others that you could have bought better, and probably for similar money.

The people to listen to are the ones that are not trying to have their purchases validated. While I own one Colt, I am not trying to validate my purchase. I am honest with myself on it, it is a base gun of quality I am not willing to go under, it's the lowest quality AR I would purchase. I bought it because at 799$, I couldn't pass it up.

The guns I run in classes, and would use in defense situations are guns I built and I think have a higher quality that a basic colt. They have better parts like FF rails, Geissele triggers, CHF barrels ect. They are also tailored to me specifically. For some one trying to get into the AR world I don't suggest building with out guidance from an experienced builder. I do suggest a colt as a base entry level AR, to me a Colt is 'good enough' not 'the greatest', nor do I consider it 'as good as' some of the higher end ARs like KAC, or Larue. For someone wanting more options BCM seems great, I don't think they are better than Colt as they don't seem to try to be, they do have more options and are 'as good as' a colt.
Not nessarily. I had one it functioned flawlessly. Im not making it up just because I owned a bushmaster before. If mine malfunctioned all the time I would sure as hell let people know but it didnt so I cant speak bad about it.

I don't want to deviate too far from OP's post, but with all these high quality brands being thrown around, would you guys also consider the HK MR556 as a top quality AR?
(I know they're more expensive than KAC, BCM, Larue)

I haven't been able to see one in person, much less strip it to inspect it. I know the Colts are a screaming deal right now, but the idea of getting a HK416 clone (need to cut down and reprofile the barrel) just seems really cool/fun. May even end up getting a Colt later this year just to have a DI AR15.

I ran a 14.5 bushmaster Carbine upper for years. It was a decent beater with a good (Colt) bolt group installed. I put in the area of 25-30k rounds through that sucker. Now it was very overgassed and would toss a random malf every 3-5k rounds or so. But it worked and shot accurately for the most part.

I wouldn't buy another one now.... I got that upper when it was Colt, Bushmaster, or Armalite... and that was about it... other than Oly arms.. which isn't even worth mentioning.

Yes, the MR556 is a quality weapon, although the barrel profile and rail make it really front heavy.

... but you can get two Colts with mags, slings, and Aimpoint PROs for each for the price of one MR556. And you can probably buy weapon lights for both after you count in the price of reprofiling the MR556 barrel.

Whom would you expect to defend/denigrate a particular firearm if not people who have personal experience w/them? Would it be more acceptable to you to have a non-owner defend them? I take all anecdotal reports w/a grain of salt but I trust a report from someone who owns the firearm in question over a report from someone who doesn't.
And for the record, I'm a BCM/Colt guy.

    Exactly.

Anyone who starts recommending something they don't have....well I'd be skeptical. Less so if they had it at one time, as long as I can understand why they decided to move away from it.

The only reason why I sold mine was because my brother wanted it.

In 2015 WHY are we still having these conversations? There are 700 billion documented examples of reasons not to buy the crap you're talking about. MIGHT an Armalite/DPMS/Wyndham/Bushmaster/RRA be an okay rifle for you? Sure, I guess it might. It also might be a total piece of shit. If you want to take the 800 dollar gamble instead of buying something of known quality for probably less than 20% more on top of what you're spending.... I guess then I can't help you.

Not trying to be a smart ass at all, and my eyes aren't what they used to be so maybe that's it.
If you cannot ascertain what the issue is, you really need to read a lot more on this site.

Here we are again with folks trying to argue the merits of low end, commercial grade rifles.....They should stick to tos, that way they have hoards of groupies to discuss how awesome their dpms rifle is.
