Im a fan of the Golf, especially the GTI. I have several friends with VW products and they all appear to be pretty reliable cars. However when something does go wrong it is expensive to fix. Thought to be fair only one of them have had a problem that actually affected the driving of the car. His fuel pump went out on his TDi diesel Passat. Luckily it was still under warranty as it was like 5 grand to replace.
Just to throw another option out there. My wife bought a 2008 Scion Xb in January 2008. Has 117k miles on it now and has zero mechanical problems. The only time its been in the shop other than routine maintenance was for a dash trim piece that came loose when the holding clip broke. Toyota replaced it for free with no hassle in about 20 minutes. It has great room in it and can haul a lot of crap if you fold the seat down. She averages 27 mpg with it. For a car that was 17 grand new I have been thoroughly impressed with it.

No dude is going to get shot in the chest at 300 yards and look down and say "What is that, a 3 MOA group?"
