How quiet are 9mm or .45 pistols w/ say an Osprey?

I have a dog that's not very fond of gunfire of any kind. I'd like to take a 9mm or 45 out and waste some money blasting some tree stumps (excellent bullet stops btw, 308 goes maybe 4" in it and stops) for the hell of it. I assume a 45 suppressed with reg 230 gn ball is subsonic correct? If so I would also assume it would be less loud that many of the 9mm supersonic rounds available?

I plan on getting a run of the mill glock 19 with threaded barrel and a Silencerco Osprey 45 (so I can use it on 45's as well) just to do some plinking where hopefully it won't scare the dog. There have been times where he hasn't heard my full power 308 700 go off through my specwar 762, then others he has I don't know why.

    So I guess I'm wondering how a suppressed 9 or 45 stacks up against a suppressed 223 or 308?

I've never actually heard a suppressed pistol of any kind, but I'm quickly gaining an interest considering the form 4 times are around half what i waited for for my specwar.

SilencerCo has all of their dB ratings listed for each can.

    Umm... That.. doesn't actually... help..

Do you own an Osprey? If so how would you consider it's perceived "loudness" compared to the 223 or 308 suppressor that you are most accustomed to shooting or being shot nearest to you?

Mind you I have NEVER heard or shot a suppressed pistol of any kind in person.

I have shot/heard a specwar 762 on a 308 and 223. 308 w/21 inch barrel. 223 with 16" and 11.5" barrels. That's the full extent of my silencer knowledge. That's why I want to know from those who do, is a suppressed pistol caliber pistol, less loud that a suppressed rifle caliber rifle? Specifically a 9 or 45 vs 223 or 308, since those are the only ones I am familiar with personally.

    Rifles = supersonic
Pistols = subsonic (unless you're doing it wrong)

Pistols will be quieter than rifles, generally even if you do it wrong. There are exceptions to this. I don't actually own an Osprey, but there is nothing magic about Ospreys, unless being square and louder than the competition is magic.

I knew they were square, did not know they were louder, already I am glad I asked this question.

So, what pistol suppressors are recommended? I guess I liked the ospreys because they seemed to sit lower in relation to the sights. And I handled one at a gun show and was impressed with its weight, or lack there of. I have never considered purchasing a pistol suppressor before yesterday, and my attempt at researching them was not very helpful.

    I appreciate it.

The Osprey 9 is the quietest pistol can on the market right now. That said any of the top cans will be good enough, I wouldn't get hung up on a few DBs. And as you've noticed Osprey Is shorter and lighter (especially out front) than it's competition, IMO it's the best pistol can you can buy. Octane and especially the Griffin Rev may be better cans if you have a sub gun or pistol caliber carbine you wish to suppress but on a pistol Osprey is still king.

It's not out yet but the Surefire Ryder 9 Ti looks like a winner to me to me, about the same level of sound suppression as the Octane but not as good as the Osprey, still light like the Osprey, a little longer like the Octane and a thinner tube giving you a similar sight picture advantage that the Osprey provides.

Overall Db reduction is superior in the Osprey as you can see for yourself, same shooter, same equipment, same host, same ammo. Osprey yields and even more impressive advantage when seeing the DB reduction at the shooter's ear over the other cans, due to it's massive internal volume.

I have a Tirant 9mm and with subsonic ammo (freedom munitions hush is the quietest I have found) it's super quiet. Its quieter than my 22 pistol suppressed. I can be on my deck shooting and my wife doesn't even hear it.

    I have an octane 9

I would say it is equal in loudness to a strong pellet rifle.
Why do the loudest do the least?

I have a Osprey 45 and also a ti-rant 9mm. The Ti-rant 9 is quieter then the Osprey 45 when both shot out of my Glock 17. I bought the Osprey for the ability to shoot out of multiple hosts and calibers. And 3 years later have never shot anything but 9mm out of it. So I bought a specific 9mm can. I was in the same boat as you with the dogs not liking gunfire. Yesterday I shot 3 boxes of Emcon suppressor specific ammo with both dogs running around about 30 Yards behind me with my wife. They had no idea what was going on. When shooting the Osprey 45, I would need to shoot it wet to achieve same 9mm suppresson. Especially first round.

I would say if you plan to shoot 9mm mainly. Get a 9mm can. Then decide if you even shoot or like it enough to get another for your other calibers. I very rarely shoot suppressed pistol because of the in ability to holster the weapon and unless you have a shooting bench or table you can just set it on, it's kind of a pain. Especially with a hot suppressor. I will say it is nice for the times the wife and dogs are around and and you dont need everyone with ear pro on. To me, I get a lot more out of rifle suppressors and they see 10x use.

Stick with a specific caliber for best suppression. If I didn't get the Ti-rant for 200 bucks with the promo going on, I would have picked up an Osprey 9mm. But you really can't go wrong with the cans mentioned above. Just in my opinion with the experience I have had, stick to a specific dedicated caliber pistol can with some decent subsconic ammo. Pretty much all 147gr 9mm will do.
