PEQ-2A and other military lasers how to obtain

Does anyone have an suggestions on how a civilian can legally purchase or rather locate a military grade class III laser that is not contraband, ie not stolen from the military? I see PEQ-2A's come up on ebay and other websites. My concern is getting one that is or was obtained from a legal source. Anyone with any knowledge or experience on this topic? I'm an NFA dealer. I can legally by and sell almost any type of machine gun but Class III laser's seem to be out of reach even to me as a title II dealer. I recently purchased two PEQ-2A's from a reputable source. I was told that they were legally obtained through auction. A few months later, the dealer calls me and advises that the FBI paid him a visit and he needs them back as they were stolen from the military. This is really unfortunate as I would like to keep them but under the circumstances I cannot.

If I am not mistaken the FDA says the only people that can posses them are the military and law enforcement agencies. You might contact TNVC for advice.

There is no law against possession of a class III laser. However, the FDA strictly enforces the sale of these items. Manufacturers are not allowed to sell these to anyone but LEO and military. One can be legally obtained from one of these sources but getting either to sell one to a civilian is rare but plausible.

The FDA bottleneck is why agencies can't resell them to the civilian market. The military ones obviously stay military, and can only be DRMO'd to LEO, with that same caveat - supposedly the only ones in the wild were the odd contractor sourced ones (probably through some sketchy-ITAR hookup connection) that FDA didn't have visibility on that are out there, but I'm really not sure how to go about verifying if a particular unit meets those unicorn criteria (and isn't one stolen from a MIL/LEO armory).

Another shining example of our wonderful government to be certain.

I had no idea it was the FDA. That's crazy.

I'm surprised the EPA isn't in on it saying they cause excessive light pollution.

I think we almost agree with each other. You can have as many as you want but no one can legally sell you one.

Well, you're playing it kind of fast and loose with the word "law". There is no criminal statue concerning their possession, but there are regulations concerning their sale.

IIRC, the FDA regulating these items is no different than the same agency regulating lasers for hair removal or eye surgery.

There is a good reason for this. Class III IR lasers can cause blindness without the subject ever knowing that some asshole is shining it in their face.

Another issue with these Class III lasers is that neither Insight nor Steiner/Laser Devices will warranty broken units. If you ship it to them, they will not return it.

My advice, stick to the civilian ATPIAL and DBAL units. They will accomplish 90% of their military grade counterparts.
