The PMAGs were fine in all lowers, BUT all of my BCM lowers (multiples) had much less space between the over-insertion tab and the rear of the magwell. All of the other lowers from other companies had noticeable space between the tab and magwell/trigger guard; it was visible and one could see through the gap. All of the BCM lowers were tight and had no visible space in the gap, though still worked.

It obviously would require more thorough and representative testing, but in my small experiment, it seems the problem is on BCM's end, not Magpul's. Even as a rabid BCM fanboy, I too wonder how this problem would've been confronted in this thread had the brand been DPMS or Spikes or some other trash. I doubt Magpul would be getting any heat here.
But unless BCM only recently made a change to their dimensions it's hard to fault them. If they've been making their lowers the same for 10 or whatever years and never had a problem until these mags, is it really their fault, or the company that decides to use a different method to prevent over-insertion? Both great companies it's just an unfortunate issue.

The over-insertion tab serves absolutely no purpose. Has anyone really over-inserted a magazine? In almost 50 years of g.i. mags, over-insertion has NEVER been a problem.

I think the Gen M3 should be considered a revision of the Emag. If you don't need an Emag, use Gen M2.

If you absolutely have to use Gen M3, or want to be compatible, file your lower to fit (I did).

For the lowers that barely work with M3s, what happens when Magpul makes a few mags with the tab a few thousandths high? It ain't gonna work. The tolerances are close on the lowers and the mags, and there's not a definite industry wide spec on either part.

Completely agree with this although I still prefer the regular Emag to the Gen M3.

Yeah I read it. And if you're using an AR the over-insertion tab serves no purpose. I've never had happen, seen, or heard of a mag getting over/inserted by someone dropping the gun or going prone with the mag locked in and the bolt forward. Ever. If it was an issue, it would be blown all out of proportion on the internet.

I can see how a gorilla could do it with the bolt open, but still have never heard of it.

I have over 20 M3 30s. I use 'em right alongside the M2s in a BCM, Colt, and Armalite lower. They all work.

Problem with a new BCM lower

I've always heard a strong debate about placing your mag on the ground while shooting because it'll cause malfunctions. His post left me with the impression that the tab helps prevent that.

If you're really getting aggressive in mag mono prone, you'll have issues without the tab. Maybe not for country club range day, but for hard use in the real world, yeah it's a good thing.
