See the thing is whenever we say that a given mass shooting took place due to the shooter getting a gun that went thru an FFL, NICS background check, and then happened in a gun free zone, they don't pick up on it that way.
The way they read it is: since the gun was legally purchased, make handguns illegal. Since it happened in a gun free zone, expand the gun free zone to be the entire city limits.
When you mention Chicago's failed gun control they pick it up as: let's implement Chicago style gun control to the surrounding states, so criminals can't "import" firearms.
When you say criminals mostly use stolen guns that were legally purchased and owned before being stolen their answer is: let's make it illegal to buy and own guns, so criminals have no where to steal them from.
Add in the tired "guns were only designed to kill" and you have the gun ban clowns entire playbook.

"A man killed at least three people and injured 34 in a murderous rampage Saturday after driving his car at 140km/h straight into crowds of lunchtime shoppers in Austria before getting out and stabbing passers-by.
In an attack that lasted just five minutes, a 26-year-old man described as a "deranged lone assassin" sped through the main shopping street in the country's second biggest city of Graz at 12.30pm, local time.
The attacker, who is an Austrian of Bosnian descent, then ploughed across the busy square, which was hosting an event relating to the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix which is being held nearby, ramming into an outdoor dining table full of people."

.OlllllllO.
I watched the segment and came away with a different message than the OP. In fact, he seemed to focus the segment on one major and two minor themes. The major point was that leftest attempts to link these mass murders to the 2nd Amendment were disingenuous and pointless. With this point, I agree completely.
The minor points that he made centered around the hypothetical scenario of what he would do as President to reduce gun violence in America which he noted is largely centered in our urban population. The first minor point was that he would impose a 10-year minimum federal sentences for being a felon caught with a gun. I think that he bases this idea on similar programs in the '90s such as Project Exile which had some success in cities like Richmond. I agree with most of this idea but wish the States would step up to the plate. In other words, I too would massively expand the "prison state" in that respect.
The second minor point which garnered so much attention is the notion of a gun registry. This is where Bill and I part ways. I suppose that we could debate a national registry of severely mentally ill, but the number of lives saved would likely be minuscule; unlikely worth the cost in liberty or money.
In the end, I found myself agreeing with 2/3 of what he said which is par for the course. I don't think that the man is an idiot. The fact that he comes across as a cocky prick doesn't bother me at all; it's a common trait among the very successful and effective. I'm proud to have carried the label a few times from my opponents and competition.

That's pretty much the impression I got as well, I agreed with what O'Reilly was saying up the point of a national gun registration.. I don't have a problem with taking these little gangbanging pricks who stick up stores, gas stations, etc and when they're caught, just for using a gun to commit the robbery,(or any other violent crime) take about 10yrs off their life and put them in prison, If they shoot (but don't kill) somebody, then take 20yrs, They kill somebody while committing robbery,(or any other violent crime) then automatic life or death penalty.. No sentence reductons, early outs, plea bargaining, parole, nothing, they'll do every minute of their time. I don't care if they're 15-16 yrs old. You want to commit big-boy crimes, then you get to go to big-boy prison when you're caught. You'll need to build more prisons, but I'd bet if laws like this were enforced, Crime with firearms would drop.

There's a race of men who don't fit in, A race that can't stay still, So, they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will..
The primary idea is to remove criminals from the street for 5+ years with deterrence being secondary. I lived in Richmond during Project Exile and it made some reasonable impact on murder rates. You'd be amazed at how many felons got pinched for an automatic 5 years after being found with an illegal gun on a traffic stop. That was a future murder who was unavailable to commit their crime because they were behind bars.

I agree completely. However, there were a number of libertarian groups who opposed Project Exile which gave felons with a gun an automatic 5 years in federal prison. This included people such as Brian Puckett of GunTruths.com, Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America, Angel Shamaya of KeepAndBearArms.com, and former NRA director Russ Howard. These people represent the "end the prison state" wing of the libertarian movement.
