If the extractor has the sort of tension that requires vice grips to install, how much use is that going to be in a field weapon?

Extractor tension becomes a balance between sufficient to prevent the extractor jumping the rim and so much that the rim is damaged during loading. If the extractor cannot snap over a case rim without deforming it then the potential for FTE is increased incrementally.

The other problem that can persist is that the cycle time to failure of the spring is decreased as the spring force is increased within a set geometry. Heavier springs cannot be compressed as much wrt the free length if they are to live.

The geometry of the extractor is frequently more of the culprit for extractor jump than the spring tension.

I use the Bravo Co upgrade in both my 10.5" and 16" guns.
I don't use the O-ring in either one as I found that after the Vise Grip installation there was way too much tension on the extractor.
The bolt was forcing the extractor past the rim with enough tension that it would remove a bit of brass.
They both run 100% without the o-Ring. I keep the o-rings in my field kit in case the springs ever show any indication of weakness.

    IIRC-
There was a discussion a while ago that indicated that if the extractor tension was increased the ejector tension would be critical.

Something to the extent of if your weapon was well used and you installed all extractor upgrades you would probably need to replace the ejector spring with a new one. I do not recall if there was a need for an upgraded ejector spring, but I don't think so. This is definately accepting the reasons stated by Mr Alexander as well.

I would definately ensure that the ejector is clean and well lubed. I have "fixed" a lot of problem guns by simply cleaning the extractor and ejector (not limited to AR platform).

As I said before, I have not needed all of the upgrades on any of my ARs.

With all the upgrades it is possible to over power the ejector.

How often have you personally seen this? I never have, but as I said, neither my work guns or personal ones have the whole package installed.

I would NEVER in a million freakin' years put an extractor system in my bolt that required me to use a plier or vice grips to assemble.

If that's the only way the upper would run, I'd get a different upper.

Well if you don't like the idea of using the plier or vice grips then anyone can just press the extractor against a hard object while holding the bolt and install the pin.
