Can't we just start subtracting dollars from foreign aid for every one of these knuckleheads we catch and a'la "The Donald" just start using the money to build a damned wall?

Every 10 miles build a small, permanent patrol base, and set the National Guard and Reserve unit's of all Branches on a 3 year rotation - for AT every 3rd year you pull border duty.

If I remember correctly when I was in the business, lots of Texas National Guardsmen were working the border.
I don't believe they were doing much more than basic admin and translation stuff, but they were there. I haven't been in that business in over a decade though, things very well could have changed.
I wouldn't have an issue cutting any money we send to Mexico until we get compliance. Apparently we gave 971.3 million in 2014. I have a feeling we could get a lot of security for that money.

Nobody has suggested the easiest and cheapest way for us to get border security. The magic solution is to bribe the upper echelon making decisions in Mexico. And if we're really serious, we could work out a deal with a cartel to assist--like the feds did with the mafia during WW2 to prevent sabotage in the east coast docks.

Making a deal with the mafia to help protect docks which we share a mutual interest in is nothing close to trying to make a deal with the cartels to help them prevent their products from entering our country.

I would turn the entire border area into a SOCCOM desert warefare training area. Starting with NSW conducting training exercises in the gulf, AH-64 target ranges in the most active areas and Rangers and Green Berets conducting tunnel searches.
