That's the beauty of the SCAR/LMT and any other fast change barrel system. You are not stuck with a flashbang producing rifle.
According to the military they are getting 2,750 out of 130gr. MK319 MOD 0 ammo with the SCAR CQC 13".

(bottom of page 23).
A normal AK load is 123gr. at 2,350..... a pretty big difference!
I totally agree with you Sensei that a single barrel rifle isn't that practical, and most people should stick to 16". But for those of us with a specific niche, and with a suppressor, I don't see a problem with it. I only went 14.5" pinned on my LMT because I didn't want to SBR it.
I only chopped it because:
1. I ready have a 18" match 308 barrel
2. I already have a 20" 6.5CM barrel
3. I wanted a short hog killing rifle.
4. I own a suppressor to mitigate the blast
5. I can change the barrel out in 1 minute.
In case the link doesn't post, see part #2 on this forum: fnforum.net/forums/sbr-suppressors-nfa-items/52243-scar-17-sbr-13-barrel-ammo-recommendations.html.

The terminal performance of 155 gr TSWG OTM and 130 gr Mk319 Mod0 out of an 11-14" barrel is on par with what you get out of a the better designed 6.8spc, 300blk, or even 762x39 bullets. In return, you get more flash, recoil, and fewer suppressor options. Keep in mind that the 13" SCAR-H CQC was designed as a compromise to address the need to fulfill multiple missions in resource constrained environments. It was not designed, nor does it offer, substantially improved lethality over the competition as a CQC weapon.

When suppressed the flash is negligible. Recoil, and overall weight of the rifle are the biggest drawbacks. I'm not even arguing that a short barrel 308 is better then specific designed system (300blk SBR, 6.8 SPC II intermediate carbine etc.). I own 300 blackout SBRs, and am well aware of which I would rather use in certain situations. The fact remains that a 13"+ 308 is going to have greater distance and energy than a smaller caliber (even if it isn't earth shattering, run the numbers in JBM). At the end of the day it's up to the end user to decide if the negatives of extra weight and recoil is too costly. I agree with you that the MK 319 was developed as a compromise for those using the CQC overseas... again, this is where a switch barrel system shines. The SCAR 16 wasn't cutting it, and the standard SCAR 17 barrel was too cumbersome.
Random interesting fact:. The SAS had LMT develop the 13.5" barrel for the MWS platform, and there was an article about the Australian special forces using 12" HK417 rifles to fight ISIS.

I stand by my point that I do not advocate buying a AR10/Rem 700 in a less than 16" barrel, unless you have a specific purpose or ability to swap out the barrels.

I think that the SCAR17/MWS SBR platforms make the most sense for someone who can afford just 1 rifle. If I did not have my current means, I'd buy a SCAR17, Form 1 stamp it, and get the 13" barrel. The 13" would stay on the rifle 90% of the time as my home defense gun, I'd use the 16" barrel when I went hunting, camping, etc. Naturely, I choose a compromise optic like an Ampoint CompM4 or Micro + FTS 3X magnifier on a Larue quick detach mount or a VCOG. However, I would choose the Saker instead of Omega in this particular situation.
If I could have just 2 rifles, I choose a 10.5-11.5" 556 SBR and a 16" 308 platform. The SBR would be for home defense and the 16" 308 for outdoor use. Notice that I don't recommend "exotic" calibers for people who can afford just 1 or 2 rifles - there are many reasons for that. The Onega would be my choice in this situation.
Since I'm filthy rich, I buy whatever the hell I want and use whatever blows up my skirt any given day. However, sub-16" 308's (and sub 10" 556s for that matter) are not in my lexicon.
When it comes to the original topic of the Omega, I think that it is a great choice for MOST people. The few people who should not get it are people who like to use very short barrel lengths - for whatever reason.
