The negatives: expensive ($150), heavy (~1 lb.), large, and funny looking.

    So, now I've got a 10.5" upper.
Haven't shot it yet with the A2, but I'm wondering if the noise and flame still be a lot worse than a 16" barrel?
What are you short barrel guys using if you don't have a suppressor on, and why did you pick it?

Thanks for any knowledge you can share.
    To the OP,
What do you want the muzzle device to do, or not do? Obviously a silencer is out of the question, as stated. A 7.5" 5.56 is pretty much a terrible option unless it is required for some reason. A 10.5"ish 5.56 has significant more blast/concussion/flame than a 16" with most any load.
A brake is used by only a few when it's not involved with mounting a can. An A1 or A2 FH may be an option, I would tend to recommend some of the longer 3 or 4 prong FH devices that work well.

Consider waiting for the Surefire Warcomp to come.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Yep. Warcomp. I'd rather shoot a 10.5" with one than a 14.5" with a BCM or Battlecomp.

My 10.5 does produce a flash with an A2 (every other round during daytime, every round during night time), but the bigger problem I found was the downward pushing effect of the A2, the short barrel accentuates this because of the shear amount of gasses venting upwards.

I now use a Blackout flash hider. Zero flash, and the muzzle doesn't have a tendency to snap down every round fired. And it doesn't even ring... I don't know if it's the shortness of the barrel changing the harmonics, but my blackout doesn't ping.

I have no use for a break on an AR.
