With a 13.5" barrel you should be clocking somewhere around 2300fps-2400fps

Thats a good question..I was surprised since its introduction in 2006, the .338 federal is a saami standardized round that can practically be found in any academy or basspro shop, and you would think it would have been more popular since it bigger and has more horsepower and weight with about the same amount of recoil compared to the .308win..Who knows maybe in the near future it might be more recognized by other firearm manufacturers as a better and more practical round to be chambered in your standard AR10 platforms.

338 Federal is a very interesting round. Readily available and reasonable price. An AR in 338 Federal is very appealing to me to use on white tail and hogs. Anyone own one and can provide feedback on rifle version and mags? I would be looking at 16 inch barrel. Thanks

Going with the 338 federal wouldnt be a bad choice..all of your 308 internal components are the same..only thing that would be different will be your barrel..Your magazines and round capacity will be the same as your .308..your BCG will be the same and dont forget the 50 round drum

A few years back while exploring this cartridge looking at the velocity curves, there seemed to be a trend that the .338 Federal could do better than .308 in shorter barrels. At the time I was looking at 16" barrels, so I cobbled together an EMC in .338 using the shorter gas system of the earlier KAC BR rail and gas system. That gun runs great, but some mags do not stack as well as others. The only non KAC part on that gun is the barrel blank itself.
Fast forward to now, there is a 14.5" KAC SR25 DSR on the horizon in 7.62. I'm working on a slightly shorter version for my own entertainment that could be an equivalent given the improved short barrel performance of the .338 Federal.

Someone else is doing this. Black hole weaponry is producing barrels as short as 7.5".

Really curious what 338 federal out of a 10.5 barrel would produce. Would this be acceptable for bear? It sounds like a perfect backpacking rifle.
