I don't really post much here anymore but for some reason this thread came up on a feed of mine and I thought I'd put these pictures up just to spin things in a different direction:

20 miles of ocean between me and my BOL. I can walk easily to the marina, which is a private facility, secure and hidden at the back of a farm not far from here. I can launch with no power using a hand winch, and have crossed in sustained 25 knot winds with no issues. Worst waves we've seen have been steep 8 footers. A bit rough and we have had waves crest over the bow a few times when it's been harsh enough to have to drive straight into a wave. But that's a very seaworthy hull, built locally of 5/8" fiberglass specifically for heavy weather. It's very capable and probably the crossing could be made safely in 35kt winds, although it wouldn't be pleasant. On the other hand, locally that basically means a maximum of 3 days waiting.
Being that it's a secure, private, and hidden marina, I feel pretty comfortable walking down there and waiting out any storm. I mean obviously I'd rather drive, which would make life really easy, but the point is if all roads were impassable, I'd just walk down with a 3-day pack and wait for a good crossing.
BOL is...ready.
Full disclosure: I'm the editor of Calibre Magazine, which is Canada's gun magazine. In the past I've done consulting work for different manufacturers and OEM suppliers, but not currently. M4C's disclosure policy doesn't seem to cover me but we do have advertisers, although I don't handle that side of things and in general I do not know who is paying us at any given time.
