I wasn't specifically asking you, I quoted you because you brought up the standard barrel nut issue and I couldn't recall coming across any in my wanderings.

I don't know how the barrel could be trashed unless you tried to tear it up. A guy with the right tools should be able to R&R a FSB in 15-20 minutes. The guys complaining about how hard it is are using a block of wood, claw hammer and a nail set working off of their kitchen table. Where are you located? I am sure there is someone near you that would take care of the job.
You still should dimple the barrel correctly for the LP gas block.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBeIAjE1BhI I suspect the pins were broken free before filming but this will give you an idea of what's involved in removing the FSB. Most of us would start the pins moving with a 3/8" flat punch. You do not need a big hammer. A sharp rap with a 16 ounce hammer will transfer more energy to the pin than a heavy slow moving blow from a heavier one.
I went the troy route. All you need is some allen wrenches for the install, add rail covers where needed.

That's funny right there ... probably true too!
I'm in Miami, the land of sketchy gunsmiths. Everyone and their cousin claims to be an expert but I've yet to find someone who inspires confidence. I have a buddy who's done a few builds, has all the tools but knows his limitations and doesn't want to jack the barrel up. This thread has been beneficial and I appreciate all the feedback. I've decided not to cut the post and that removes a third of my options. I'll either buy a drop in that accommodates the factory config or find the right individual to walk me through removing the post and installing a low-pro gas block.
Thanks again, y'all!

There is another option you might want to consider, a Mossie Midnight Mount plus what ever drop-in hand guard you want.
