Is staking the castle nut worth it? Absolutely
The goal is to move enough material from the end plate into a notch or two on the castle nut that will prevent the nut from becoming loose. A hammer and center punch will get the job done. Do not use red loctite.
To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society. --Theodore Roosevelt--
Center punch, small hammer and a couple of solid thumps will usually move enough material. A couple of light taps to make a small indent enough to keep your punch from slipping when you actually hit to move material
Using a spring punch has worked well for me and seemed easier than a hammer and punch.
What happens when you want to remove it. Is it simple to reverse the staking?
It's more or less permanent. You have to grind away the staking, then get a new castle nut and end plate, which is like ten bucks tops.
Of course you could always do like a now infamous manufacturer and just red locktite it.![]()
