Hope to not go thru that again.
I meant Baltimore, you know, the sewer of the northeast.

You only say that because it has (had?) the largest open-air heroin market in the world, and at one time the CDC estimated that something on the order of 1-in-3 or 4 people there had syphilis.

At the time I became aware of the info (mid/late-90s) Baltimore outstripped everything else for drugs by a long shot.

Just remember, the CDC numbers are a bit misleading, as they aren't usually dealing with the general public, but a focused subset. In the same way the data shows that you are X-number of times more likely to be murdered if you have a gun in your house. Those numbers come from interviews where there has been a murder at the residence. I'll guess a majority of those killing happen in homes where substance abuse, domestic abuse and lots of jail time. Not really representative of the populace as a whole.

    (sorry for the thread drift)

Wife did her Residency in NOLA. First yr. there, wife, myself, and two other female Residents decided to go the French Q. for some drinks on a Sat. night. Arrived at Quarter and went into a bar for drinks. I was DD. After hr. or so, decided to hit another bar. Noticed streets were unusually quiet and deserted.

After drinking/dancing in back, isolated room of bar for hr. or so, decided to hit another bar. Girls were slightly tipsy. I was basically herding cats. Walked out into street that was absolutely jam packed and we were the only white people on it. Essence Festival. Car was around a corner, close. I instantly realized the potential for things to go south extremely quickly and told the girls to shut up, keep quiet, and head directly for the car. They were tipsy and simply didn't get it.

One of the girls was doing the slightly drunk walk/dance combo and it took all of 30 secs. from walking out the bar door until she was surrounded by 10 drunk, young black dudes. The look on her face was one of complete "Oh $hit." I have had my ghetto pass since I was twelve and went to areas where one generally doesn't go without an issue. Went to school and was friends with the same white and black people since second grade. I knew I had a chance to get the girls out of there, it just had to be done correctly AND I needed some luck.

I am in shape and muscular and any man that has roamed the streets knows when he meets another man that will not hesitate to bang. I told my wife and the other girl to grab ****** as soon as the group of guys focused on me. I was counting on the fact the guys would realise I was a fighter(esp. since I had a Gracie shirt on) which would mean they would all pounce on me and beat the shit out of me if not outright cause serious injury. Which means the girls could make a break for it and hopefully a mounted patrol would see the ruckus and get over here before I was seriously wounded.

Once again, all of this happened in the span of less than a minute. So, the girl is dance/walking gets separated. She is surrounded by 10 or so drunk, young, black men. I immediately grab the wrists of my wife and our other friend. I pull them directly into the circle, look at the biggest MFer and say, "These girls are drunk Doctors and they are acting really ****ing stupid. They've got babies to deliver tomorrow. Make sure if you bring your wifey's or old-ladies to ******* tomorrow for a baby; give these two hell." From the start this was going to go one of two ways; I get a beat down or we all walk. I could see the wheels turning in his head.

He started laughing, slapped me on the back, and said "Take care of your bitches. You gots it like that." You could see everyone crowded around relax. Unfortunately, I would be going home with only one woman b/c I did't have it like that.
LOL...Charity is the Hospital...LSU/Tulane docs would think they were too classy for that kind of thing, but they are the worst offenders...Charity is a tuff hospital to work at. My wife got her RN through them and worked in the ER there for 2 years...nothing she has not seen from the underbelly of NOLA surprises her anymore.

During first wk. of wife's Residency, she was doing an ER rotation. Had a transvestite come in that had jumped off of a roof to get away from its sig. other. that was trying to stab it. It had multiple STD's, combative(spitting, trying to claw, etc.), on drugs, and covered in blood.

Good times. NOLA is a seriously phucked up place.
