Just checked, all of my floorplates say the same.

If you gave a little more information we would be able to provide better input. And brownells magazines are issued.

Seconded, not trying to sound like jerk or anything. Full disclosure, I haven't attended every school out there. However, mags along with guns are usually issued as needed by the folks decideing you need them. Map cases and camo sticks, not so much.

That being said, Brownell's mags with tan follower are issue. We have cases of them that are not COTS purchase. They are wonderful mags.

Many current issue mags are coming with blank floor plates and body marked with cage code and date. I have taken both Center and Okay out of the wrap with blank floor plates, have not noticed if Brownells are still marked or not.

Ranger school does require you bring your own magazines and M4 BFA. Normally, the student's permanent unit will provide you with these items. If you are TDY enroute, I am not sure how you are supposed to get these items. If it were me going to this school, I would contact the school and see how they want it done. It's not like Army schools are all that secretive.

Thanks for checking and responding guys.

Very simple question, are the brownells valid if a soldier has to procure their own? Consensus appears to be yes.

    As to specific circumstances:
    - Packing list requires bringing a specific number of M4 mags
    - Attendees have to procure much of their gear and have it ready for layouts (no suprise)
    - No units handy to issue mags (for a very specific reason, not uncommon)
    - CIF does not issue.

And yes, attendees coming from their unit directly do not have this issue.

As to initiative, Lysander is dead on. This all started as son and buds getting ready and were considering purchasing some very beat up mags from the surplus store outside the gates.

Appeared to me to be culls, and were $7.50 each. He asked if that was a good deal. I told him not so much, he can get new Brownells for $9, supposedly issue.

His answer was "let me find out from cadre if there is another way to get them".

I wanted to confirm the Brownells would pass muster if it made sense to source some, could be fairly strict scrutiny.

End of story. No shortage of initiative, just a basic equipment question.

Thanks to all who have offered GI mags, if it turns out he needs them I may ping you back.

I'll just add that there is a thread a while back that mentions a Las Vegas range that rents out full auto weapons. They say that they use Brownells mags exclusively and have found them to be very reliable. I can't remember the numbers but we're talking many thousands of rounds down range without an issue.

I'm in a different MOS and a different branch of the military, but if he is being required to bring magazines to the course at his own expense, why do they require a NSN? I doubt you'll find new commercially available mags that have one stamped on them, but I could be wrong.

It would seem the Army is making things harder than they have to be- which wouldn't surprise me. TDY enroute to a new command is always tough from a logistics standpoint.
