I happen to have both from BCM, a 16" LW middy and a 20" gov profile.

The 16" LW middy is accurate enough with M193 and irons (intent was not a bench gun) and the whole gun weighs 6.5lbs. The LW profile saves about 4 oz out front vs gov profile barrel. It heats up quick but that doesn't seem to affect it's groups, not nearly as severe as my 580 series Mini 14 (it's groups double in size when hot).

My 20" gov profile is setup similar to an M16 A2 (but with detach carry sight), and shoots just fine, weighs just over 7.5lbs. The bullets are really flying out of the 20" based on bullet drop. M193 shoots combat accurate (irons only), but considering it's LW under the handguards, an A1 profile barrel would've been better. But I got the complete 20" upper cheap when they were selling with free CH and BCG, so I wasn't too picky. I basically just wanted to put together a more traditional looking 20" with no real purpose for it in mind.

If you are doing run 'n gun, carrying it alot, or just want the best handling AR get the LW. If you want the most accurate bench gun or do lots of mag dumps, you want to look for a medium or heavy profile barrel; the gov profiles are still LW under the handguards but add unnecessary weight way out front. If you want a truly classic looking A1/A2 I would start with a dedicated retro upper.

Personally I prefer the 16" LW middy by a long shot.

My lightweight barrel is nice enough to allow me to hit steel at 600 yards. I don't do retard mag dumps. Markm and others have used their LW barrels to do some pretty impressive shooting.

Unless you are going to be supersniperSEALteamKO19shuttlegunner it will be more than adequate.

    Ever handled a Colt 6720?

    I did....long after I bought my 6920.

Too bad because if I had experienced the 6720 before....I would have bought one instead of the heavier 6920.

Unless you are wanting super precision or doing run and gun hot and heavy shooting...the handiness of that type of AR is fantastic, if you ask me.

I'm still undecided, it won't be a "go-to" rifle for so it really comes down to which one will I enjoy the most. I love the idea of a 6.5lb rifle. I also love the classic M16 look. Its a good day when this is the hardest decision I'll have to make for a while.

    Handle both and then decide.

An A4 is a clumsy, unweildy beast.

A 16" lightweight with an adjustable stock in a lithe, quick little gun.

For me, I like a stouter barrel, and a bit more weight up front. I don't need a super-light AR.

Again, I think its going to come down to your uses.

If you want to take "go-fast" tactical training that puts a premium on quick handling and rapid shooting, as most here do, then the LW 16" makes perfect sense. I have two (one BCM and one Centurion). If that style of shooting is not your goal, and you would prefer to spend more time on just plinking, traditional marksmanship, or just want a super smooth shooting gun that stands out at the range (because everyone else has a 16" gun), the 20" is great. I don't find my 20" with A5 kit particularly clumsy or unwieldy, the noticeable forward balance actually helps me out in positional shooting, but I'm also not using it to clear buildings or ride in cars with.

I'm gonna sell my LW DD barrels because I plan on shooting suppressed exclusively. If I didn't get into cans I would stick with pencils, huge weight savings, gun handles like a toy.

Based on reading this thread, I get the impression other people's shooting experiences are vastly different than mine.

When I shoot, my barrel is hotter than hell in one magazine, heat shimmering off the barrel and rail. I can't imagine how much accuracy I would lose with a pencil barrel after one mag. Does everyone else shoot 5 rounds and then let their AR cool down?

Hopefully my video will help you and other folks see exactly what happens in that scenario:
