And if you have a proper shrouded bolt carrier, the hammer cannot contact the firing pin when out of battery.

I took the barrel, bolt and the pieces of brass left over to my gunsmith. He said it was probably a shell with not enough powder. When there isn't enough powder sometimes it can all burn at once creating a pressure spike. He said I could get a new barrel extension since mine is trashed but it would probably cost $75 or more to have it sent off and installed.

You're getting some good advice here, so don't disregard it. You experienced a case head failure. It was not an out of battery discharge. Do not reuse the barrel or bolt. The carrier is often cracked or damaged in cases like this as well. You should closely inspect the lower for deformations.

If you know with certainty what ammo caused the failure, contact the manufacturer of the ammo. They would likely replace the ammo and will often replace the upper.

I'm definitely going through the parts with a fine toothed comb and checking for metal fatigue as I put this back together. My gunsmith said it was an ammo problem but getting Federal to buy or reimburse me for the new upper and parts would be tough. They would more than likely tell me to go pound sand. I don't have the box that the ammo came in anymore. So just with that I think I'm up a creek without a paddle. I already send Federal an email stating what happened and what my gunsmith thought caused it. I didn't say I wanted anything in return, I will leave that up them. I'm not a person to demand things when I cannot prove 100% that their product caused damage.

You need to seek a new gunsmith. I'll assume neither you nor him understand the difficulty in trying to reinstall a new barrel extension.

It also seems as if you want to discount SOLID advice being given to you. Good luck.

Get a new barrel OP. Putting on a new barrel extension requires quite a bit of torque and the new extension may or may not clock correctly with the gas port.
