    Current Bargain Rifle Suggestions

    Hello all,

I have been lurking in this forum for awhile and figured I'd utilize my first post to gather some opinions on bargain deals (700-800$) for my first AR purchase. This time of the year offers some of the best deals on complete rifles so I figured I'd take the plunge while prices are relatively low.

I've done quite a bit of research on the platform and have come up with a couple different rifles that I am considering. I'd like to make a purchase with the confidence that I am getting the best bang for my buck. I'd like to buy in to a brand that is respected in the industry, built with quality materials, and has good customer service.

With that said I've had my eye on Armalite's defender 15 series, S&W M&P 15 sport, and PSA 16" c
    Classic Freedom Lightweight SS Rifle.

Aesthetically the PSA rifle seems to be a steal (free float guard, mid-length low-pro gas block), but the pencil thin stainless steel 1/7 twist barrel concerns me because I haven't seen much discussion with respect to SS barrels. The Defender rifle by Armalite carries the classic name and wears a 1/7 twist chrome lined barrel. S&W's sport model (1/9 moly lined barrel) is for sale at bass pro for 700$ and comes with 2 pmags and an autoloader, but lacks some of the unnecessary features such as a forward assist and dust cover.

I know there will be some give and take with a budget AR, but I'd like to make a purchase knowing I got the "best" product for the money spent.

The rifles I mentioned are just a few that I have been considering so please share others that meet the criteria ($800ish Max).

In my price range, yes. I have yet to find a colt in the 7-800's.

Edit: Nice Bob, how would you compare that to the PSA I mentioned? I've been leaning towards the PSA.

The listed Colt wins all three of the categories you mentioned over the others, easily. If it were $200 more than your other options, than maybe it'd be worth listening to any arguments that could be made for any of the three you listed. But it's not, so buy it now and enjoy it.

Thanks for the input! Colt looks to be the popular choice. What sets it apart from other rifles in that price range? I'm a noob, take it easy

TDP, The Name brand, ie: the standard that all others follow or try to. until you go to the ones to exceed on standards. And it will hold it's value. A Colt will be always that. Replacement parts will be standardised no goofball proprietary screws, pins, etc.. I don't think the ones you named have them but I have a friend that got a "good deal" on a custom AR. I checked it had set screw holding bolt catch barely in place but not functional.

If you're dead set on those choices, go with the S&W. But for goodness sakes, shop around. That M&P Sport is $550 at Grant's (the above linked website).
