I'm also not sure salt bath nitride is a good treatment for a bolt or bolt carrier, the case hardened finish might not be the best for a part that slams to a stop against the barrel extension. You probably want more ductile strength and nitride might compromise that. I could be wrong, we'll see if any metallurgy experts chime in.

If you strive for a mainstream stamp on another generic BCG, the order that one.
Steve-0, you're one of the people I had in mind with my question since my next BCG is probably going to be from Sionics. I've seen a few posts like Coal Dragger's about the potential dangers of harder steel impacting the barrel extension—is that one of the reasons you went with NP3 for your bolts? Curious about this from a technical standpoint.

I don't know if my concern is valid or not, just thinking out loud.

As far as I can tell the only real 'benefit' to the different BCG coatings is clean up.....

I've never had an issue getting a carbine 'functionality clean' in just a few minutes. 'Inspection clean' is a whole different animal and is more of an issue with perspective than phosphate as a finish. After seeing millions of rounds (just a guess) go down range trouble free from mil spec BCG I have absolutely no inclination to even try anything different.

Hard to go wrong with any of the bcg that have been mentioned in this thread. My next one will be from sionics. NP3 is one awesome coating.

I use Clymer .223 and .308 gauges. This is a Ford or Chevrolet issue and everyone has strong opinions.

We chose NP3 mostly for the friction coefficient standpoint and the fact that it doesn't suffer from hydrogen embrittlement and trap carbon like NiB does. As far as hardness its very comparable to the standard C.158 and has held up well in our test guns and customers guns over the past few years. Weve yet to get a phone call or email about a bolt thats failed.

How much better is the NP3 vs nickel borron? I have nickel borron on my AAC BCG and I am not impressed.

To the OP the only two BCG I have had no issues with is Colt, AAC and LMT. I have not used the SIONICS but I am thinking about replacing the carrier for one of my SBRs with NP3.
