    A: it's unnecessary.

I'll be honest with you, I think that answer is dumb. If there's a technical reason not to cut them all to fit, like it would triple the cost of the handguard etc, fine. But I don't really care to be told I don't need something.

    2) What's with the short gas system?

A: Why wouldn't we use a short gas system? We use straight gas tubes, splined barrels and gas blocks so everything fits perfectly every time, and we just use port size to tune the extraction. No, we're not telling you what the port size is.

And I can tell you that they do not cycle hard at all. I think they're using a standard H-buffer; they told me but I forget. It's nothing exotic, though. Plus the straight gas tube/splined block is a very cool setup.

Anyway there you have it. Approximately carbine length gas systems, but with straight tubes and proprietary parts, which work great, but a kind of unsatisfying answer on the handguard slots.

It doesn't get much more Colt Canada than that.
I've seen the "no we're not telling you the port size" mentioned a couple different times now from different manufacturers. My question is why? Could someone not disassemble a rifle and find out as soon as the first one is sold? Am I missing something?

Like one out every 100 companies will give you port size if you ask. Dumbest sh*t ever.

Should be listed in specs for every barrel.

Just my read on it, but I'd guess the goal is just to make it as inconvenient as possible for competitors.

Anybody who dismantles an engine can take whatever measurements they like, but how much of that information does Honda put in the public domain? Very little. How many people dismantle and measure their guns? Very few.

So then it's a matter of companies actually buying guns and intentionally ripping off each others' R&D...maybe there's just enough integrity in the industry that not publicizing a lot of the data is sufficient?

    Just a guess.
Full disclosure: I'm the editor of Calibre Magazine, which is Canada's gun magazine. In the past I've done consulting work for different manufacturers and OEM suppliers, but not currently. M4C's disclosure policy doesn't seem to cover me but we do have advertisers, although I don't handle that side of things and in general I do not know who is paying us at any given time.

Maybe so. Just seems like they throw out steel specs, QC NDT, etc...only to lock up at port size. I just don't see the difference.

Yeah it would take a week and $50 to find port size. Bs reason imho.

(Buy barrel, wait to ship, sell at a loss when done)
