    Is there a concern about distorting the castle nut or (if improperly secured), bending the buffer tube? Or can I just wail on it like a moderately-trained monkey?

    It will literally take one solid hit. Don't put your full muscle into it (unless you aren't active/don't work out), but don't pansy it. Do it solid, do it once, and you're set : )

    I take a few lighter taps just to get a stake started and the tool doesn't slip. But once the stake is started a few moderate hits is all it takes. There isn't any reason to wind up like Tiger Woods. Takes me about 30 seconds if that.

    I never stake castle nuts. Never had a problem. Of course I do keep a close eye on how my gun is functioning.

    I take my guns apart too often.

    don't use a flash hider for the same reason.

    of course these are precision guns and not SHTF guns.

    My experience as well. I have found the progressive centering taps work better than a big *ss wailing. The goal is a dimple, not extruding into the interior of the tube where your buffer cycles.

    IG,

    can you tell us what you recommend putting on the threads? What is your recommended procedure for properly staking the castle nut?

    Thanks

    @jb82 -- see this thread.

    I think Iraqgunz is going to have to get some T-Shirts printed that say "Whatz on My Nutz" .. on the back will be a list of his class tour dates.

    Buy this: http://www.harborfreight.com/spring-...punch-621.html

    No other tools required.

    Put a light coating of grease on the threads. Don't matter what kind. Just do it. If you put threadlocker on the RE threads, you're a moron.
