Pretty sure that it is retaining the buffer retainer. If you look at the Nodak reproducion receivers they also have this pin but it has been relocated to not actually be retaining anything.

It pinned the buffer tube in place and kept it from shooting loose.

Receiver extension/buffer tube was screwed into receiver, then the hole was drilled to pass through the threaded portion of the buffer tube. Roll pin was then used to pin the buffer tube in place.

Thanks for the correction. I would love to get to handle a real one of those.

I could never own something like that, because I wouldn't know what the hell to do with it. Shoot it? In that condition, I couldn't bring myself to.

Look on the bright side, though, this means there are more of them left for the rest of you, and less expensive, at that.

We would call that one, "Back to Basics."

We have about 18 of those, all with the super happy fun switch...

The brass deflector was good improvement, FWIW...

I don't think you took enough pics of it..........could you take one looking down the receiver extention tube?

Seriously though, that's a rare and excellent find! Hope there's more out there like it in that spectacular condition.
If it isn't durable, it isn't reliable.

GotM4 found the original manual for the rifle and the scope and mailed them to me....I'll try to get some pics of them, it's pretty interesting.
