Can a lower be broken by using a hammer/punch to field strip?

Was reading an old thread (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread...rn-out-a-lower) and saw this posted:

My understanding of the above quotes could be mistaken. Can a lower be broken by using a hammer and punch to remove tight takedown and pivot pins?

    Thanks.

You should never pound the take-down/pivot pins with a hammer.

I've had cases where the takedown and pivot pins were impossibly tight and there seemed like no other option but to use a hammer and punch.

I can't think of anything that can't be broken be some one wielding a hammer and a punch.

This comment was geared mostly towards hammer/trigger pin hole issues. It's usually brought on by incorrect disassembly techniques and the thought that you need and hammer for everything.

Use too much force and yes. There are different levels of hammer/punch use, tapping to pounding, if the pins are so stiff that it takes more than lightly tapping with a light hammer to start then you need to look closer at what is going on. Most stiff pins on new assembly will break in and ease up after a short time, but I have also seen out of spec receivers (Oly).

I use only a small plastic mallet, tapping very lightly, on trigger pins.

If your takedown pins are tight, get them started with a cartridge, not a hammer and punch.

It's not an issue if it just needs a few light taps. Don't go all willy nilly on it though.

Thanks a lot for the responses.

Just for my own learning, provided that the hammer isn't making direct contact with the lower, how is it that hammering a takedown pin with a punch can break the lower? It seems counterintuitive to me, though I lack sense and experience when it comes to anything mechanical.
