This thread makes me glad I don't live in a totalitarian shit hole.

Wish I could give the OP any good advice beyond that given. Sounds like the OP is in a rough spot.

I currently have 2 shotguns, fed with Federal tactical 00 buck.

I carry a shotgun when going to my plantation. I am currently shopping for Glocks on a pistol permit I can have 3 pistols, so I am going to get 2 Glock 17's and a 19.

I need 2 to 3 more years in this country and then everything will be set so I can hire a manager and I can then either move back to the USA or Israel.

3rd world countries have many down sides, but some of them also have many opportunities.

    My understanding on converting a 5.56 M16 to 9mm is as follows;

Replace upper with 9mm upper. Drop in a 9mm mag block and replace buffer parts.

    Am I wrong in this?

I have carried a mini or micro Uzi enough for real, that I am not going to loose any sleep over using a lesser round than the 5.56.

I don't want to go really short barrel on a 5.56 because you loose so much power and gain so much muzzle blast. To have a small 9mm M16 that can fit in my laptop bag as a backup to a pistol is comforting in some situations.

I disagree. A 5.56 SBR is far superior to, and more compact than, a 16" 9mm AR, and the muzzle blast is not that significant when using a 10.5" or longer barrel.

    7.62Nato I agree a SBR 5.56 is better than a 16" 9mm AR.

But I am looking at a 5.5 inch barrel for the 9mm AR. Also this 5.5" barreled AR 9mm with law tactical folding stock can be carried covert where a 10,5" 5.56 can't be so easily.

I can put a short 9mm AR with folding stock into my laptop case and carry it to meetings or to the synagogue and nobody will think twice about my bag. A 10.5" 5.56 will need a larger bag to carry it in and might be questioned.

I carried a 10.5" or 11.5" Commando for years and the blast is no big deal, however you go down to 7.5" and you have blast.

Also 9mm ammo can be bought over the counter in gun stores here, 5.56 I will have to bring it in with me when I travel.

No 9mm AR that uses Uzi mags will lock back after the last round.

There are some nuances to making a 9mm, but over the counter parts will work fine. If you don't want to need to swap hammers in your lower, you'll need a 'ramped' bolt. A heavy buffer is needed, as mentioned, and the mag well conversion. Uzi mags will probably be the way to go, in spite of the fact that there is no bolt hold open, since they have good availability worldwide. There are some mag well conversions that take unmodified Uzi mags, but so far as I know, they are out of production and a bit hard to find. Last one I saw for sale was about $300. The modification for the Uzi mags, if you don't have the Uzi specific block is not too complicated, drawings are lurking on the web, or you can figure it out when you have the parts in hand.

I wouldn't waste any time on a folding stock that disables the gun when it's folded... I don't get why people think that's a good idea.

A 9mm AR will give you more issues than a 5.56.

You'll have to put in a new hammer and a magwell block.

I'd just slap on a carbine or SBR upper, pool up on good mags and call it good. Don't see where a 9mm subgun would really benefit you.

ETA I would say that umpteen years of Mk. 18s killing people speaks for itself and that unless you have a DOE upper and keep 10 round mags in it...and even then...I don't think a 9mm AR will fit so well in a laptop bag. At least not in a readily deployable manner.

Plus Colt Magwells are rolled in and you'd be punching pins in and out each time you re-calibered your weapon which will gauge your holes.

I hate folding stocks for the most part. But when I used to carry a micro or mini covertly in a shoulder bag the folding stock allowed us to do so.

I have guessed a 5.5" barreled 9mm AR with a folding stock will measure in at about 14.5". I know it can't be fired with the stock folded and wouldn't even do so if it could.

I have a few specific times where if I had the ability to carry a covert shoulder fired weapon would be better than just a pistol alone. If I could I would have an MP5k or mini Uzi semi auto only for these times and a rifle that would stay at home in the safe most of the time.

However this is not possible, so I am trying to make one platform fit multiple needs.

This is what I was looking at

    http://yhm.net/specter-black-diamond-9mm-kit-2048.html

I have middle aged eyes and can't shoot as well with a pistol as I could back in the unit. But with my mini Uzi or MP5k I can still do head shots at 50 meters fast and no sweat, CM out to 150 meters. In a land of pistols and shotguns that is more than enough.

Do I give up power by not going with 5.56, yes. But as I have stated I carried and used Uzis enough to not really loose any sleep over it.

It just has to work, to even be considered the answer to my problem.

I was hoping we had a bunch of guys here that had converted some AR's to 9mm and had the answers to make it run 100%.

I know the 10.5" 9mm M16 the Marines had that we let use one of our ranges in Israel worked great.

I don't want to be "that guy" but why not just get an UZI? Sounds like you've had access to them in the past.

If you have an MP5K, why not a Choate folding stock?

Colt SMGs aren't without issue either stemming from hammer wear or mag issues. What I was told in Colt Armorer course. In fact, If I had a choice a 9mm AR really wouldn't be my first one.

    Just my take,

Probably because he wants an AR if it gets really bad and is limited on how many different firearms he can have.
