"I want an AR as close to the real thing as possible" .... answer?

So, I've been shooting ARs for a number of years, and have not done much in-depth reading about the history of their development. But then I started reading the book "The Black Rifle" by Stevens and Ezell and my eyes have been opened to the amazingly fascinating and VERY long history of the development of the AR.

I'm beginning to lean in the direction of thinking that if I truly want an AR that is as "close to the real thing" as possible, I should go with a Colt LE6920, which is, as far as I can tell at this point, the closest thing to today's military M4 as possible.

    Advice?
    Thoughts?
    Suggestions?

    Thanks.

When you say "as close to the real thing as possible" are you referring to a military issued M4? If so, you are correct. Get a Colt 6920. The 6720 (lightweight barrel) is also a good option.

However, if what you're after is a high quality rifle that doesn't have to look exactly like one issued by the military then there are quite a few good options.

Obligatory apology in advance for not spending many fruitless minutes searching for answers via search...

Are FN ARs every bit as "mil spec" as the Colts? That is, I hear people saying that ONLY Colt has the official/copyrighted tech specs and equipment and therefore only Colts are actually "as close to" the real thing as possible?

Or, does FN now have all that too, since they are, I believe, a major manufacturer of the US military's small arms now??

    Thanks again...

Yessir, FN does make M4/M16 and has been doing so since 1989. However the Colt is still the one that most people associate the M4 with.

Just did a search on Gunwatcher and Wikiarms and looks like the FNs are $500 more than the Colt's ARs.

Then the 6920 is the rifle for you. CDNN had them for cheap but had magpul furniture.

No as FN cannot use any part of the TDP to make an M4 or A4. FN has to pay a royalty on every M4/A4 they make for the Govt and are not allowed to use ANY of the parts, machinery or knowledge gained from the TDP to sell guns to Civy's.

So not only are FN AR's more money, but not the same quality.
