    Punch set for AR assembly

Another tool thread. Any suggestions on a punch set? I was looking at the Obsidian Arms punch set, which reportedly has all the punches needed for working on an AR. At $45, it seems pricey, but also quality.

Are there any cheaper or alternative punch kits? Or is it better to purchase the punches separately?

I have never had a problem with Grace USA punch sets:

I have broken a lot of cheap punches. I invested in some good punches from Brownell's and Starett, before attending Iraqgunz AR Armorer class. They were perfext for the class, and I have used them a great deal since.

I got this set from Amazon:

No, they are not real cheap. But I viewed them as an investment. Start with the Brownell's set, then buy the Starett set the next payday.

I like Starrett. I do keep both brass and steel punches and use what's appropriate for the pin/area.

I have a set of Starett punches. They are the same ones that SeriousStudent posted in the amazon link. They are not cheap but a they are good set.

Yup, I am a real big fan of brass punches as well. They are very handy when working on pistols. I've lost count of how many times I've drifted a friend's sights at the range. I usually bring a brass punch and a gunsmith hammer (from Brownell's, natch) in my range kit.

Obsidian Arms punch set has all the punches needed for working on an AR lower only. It does not have the smaller punches needed for work on A1 or A2 sights, gas tube pin or extractor/ejector IIRC. It is not a bad set to start with if money is a major factor or you don't want buy the complete set of pin punches, roll pin punches and holders. The better setup if you have the coin are the sets SeriousStudent linked plus a bolt catch pin punch.

Buy your stuff from Brownells. If you ever have an issue then you can send them back and they will replace them. I have sent hundreds of dollars of stuff back.

Only Starett here. They are so much better/stronger than anything else I've tried.
