Bushmaster is the best hands down. There are so many things you can do with it that you cannot with others.

    1. make a battle lamp for when friends come over
    2. show a from vietnam and he will confirm its the best
    3. hang it on the wall for when you watch platoon
    4. Become invisible in bushes, hence "bushmaster"
    5. Be one step above all your buddies with airsoft.

I'd recommend the BCM in lieu of the Colt. You can also get a regular or blem lower from Grant and then go to BCM's website and order the upper of your choice with $69 BCG group included. Not restricted to carbine gas system as with Colt & option for a cold hammer forged barrel. Will need rear sight and hand guard of your choice. If budget is a problem, you can assemble as funds permit.

Unfortunately Primary Arms no longer has BCM lowers for $300 but take a look at this thread: Current Bargain Rifle Suggestions

Rainier had some for $250ish, and Grant had some for even less around Black Friday. I doubt we'll see those prices for a while, given we're practically in 2016, an election year.

If you're only buying one, for ever and ever, just buy the Colt. IMHO, if you're only going to have one, make it a whole one. Although you definitely open up your options mixing blem lowers and different uppers, my scientific wild ass guess is that if you are sure you only want one for SHTF then you probably aren't considering shooting as a serious hobby. If you become a convert, or come into some money down the road, this community will never lack of opinions on how you can spend new found time and dollars. Of that I am certain.
Owning a complete model rifle (I think) is superior for customer service and resale, should the need arise. Best of luck.

^ This. For your first one get a high quality complete rifle that has a warranty and that was assembled completely by a professional with all the right tools.

Plus the Colt will come with everything you need to get up and running: sights, magazines, cleaning kit, sling, and a manual. None of it will be fancy, but it will be basically functional and of good quality.

These are some solid comments, OP. Colt is really the only option you should be looking at.

My bad, I didn't try to add one to the cart and according to the page I linked I didn't see "out of stock".

Not sure if they are drying up after San Bernardino and the latest anti 2nd rhetoric, OP should snag the 6920 that is local to him for south of $1K then.

Colt is the smart money. Aside from the fact it is a known gtg rifle, if you ever need to sell it, it's the one everybody wants.
