Looking for some direction on a new rifle

So I've made a New Years resolution to take some carbine classes this year, and get out and shoot more. I've realized over the last couple of years I've just been building clone rifles and collecting NFA stuff. And while that has been fun, I haven't really been getting to the range. So I want to build a quality rifle, get to the range more often, and take some classes this year.

And that's where I am. I've always had SBR's because I like to supress things, and I'm not sure if I should build this off an SBR lower or not. I know the legalities of them, traveling with them, etc. I've been looking at the SR-15, which has both SBR and 16"+ offerings. I guess I could get an SBR upper and a 16"+? Two uppers for different uses? This would be something I'd want in case of pandas attacking, so would be stored in case of such a bamboo shortage caused an up rising.

I don't want just mil spec, I have a MK18 clone, but I know there are better options. Like the KAC. Noveske? Larue? Other good brands? I don't need this to be a tack driver, but something a little more accurate couldn't hurt. My longest range is 600 yards currently, and honestly if I see a panda past that distance I'd likely not be shooting at it anyway.

Suppressed? Not? Optics? Was looking at the nightforce 2.5-10x. Normally have aimpoints. Thought of maybe a trijicon but not sure I'd want a fixed 4x. Guess I could throw two uppers in my panda bag, but one would be nice for all around use.

I'd also be fine setting this up to run one type of ammo. No reason to set up a make a plan if I don't follow it. Not saying money is no problem, but at the same time not looking to just run Tula 55gr.

    Anything else I'm missing?

How about something light weight? If I had to pick one rifle to fight off the Free Bamboo Army (lol), it would be my lightweight free floated carbine with a Faxon Gunner 16" middy barrel. Lightweight or no, it is more accurate than your average chrome lined mil spec barrel, and is extremely handy and nice to carry. I have a can on the way, and it should go nicely on it.

I'm a KAC fan, so I'd say get a Mod2, sbr the lower then get an 11.5 upper. run either suppressed if you like. Get an rds of your choice for the 11.5 T2, or the MRO which I like better than the Aimpoint micros.
For the 16 inch upper get a 1-4, 1-6, or Elcan Ive got 3 Elcans and love them, Ive got 3 NF 1-4's FC2, and 2 Steiner 1-4 which all are super nice.
You then have all bases covered and the KAC will hold up to whatever shooting schedule you can throw at it.

Never heard of Faxon. I'll have to look into it. What can do you use? Guess that is another question, I've been out of the latest and greatest for the last 18 months or so.

I've got no problem with this, other then finding a rifle. I've always been a fan of KAC, own some of their stuff, but never a full rifle. I'd rather buy a factory rifle, I'm OCD about that sort of thing, don't like engraving my info on things. But I'm not a fan of the mod2 rail. I guess the keymod is nice? I really liked the mod1 with the little rail up front for a light if I needed. But was too busy to pay much attention to it, so missed the change over and didn't get one before they were gone.

I own a elcan, is a nice site, do you find you'd want more magnification then the 4x? That's why I was thinking a nightforce 2.5-10x24 for this rifle.

For carbine classes, if your using mil surplus ammo, get a kac with an aimpoint micro.

Maybe a 1-4, but I think a 2.5 will be too much to run comfortably at close range. Just my .02.

You can get both optics in qd mounts for different situations.

Then go with the factory sbr, and then the 16 inch upper. Ive got 4 Mod 1's which do look better, but to me the Mod 2 feels better and its light, they will be coming out with mlok soon, if you hunt there are still Mod1's out there or contact KAC to see if you can get the Mod1. I'd only get a 2.5 if I had plans on shooting primarily over 500 yards.
If I had a 2.5 then I'd also go with an offset rds.

I don't need to run mil surp ammo. I have a pile of it for blasting full auto, but if I want to build a nice rifle I'm fine with buying better ammo for it. Pandas are heavy beasts. Don't know what round for panda.

I guess the 2.5x might be too much for close work, would you be ok with a 1-4x out to 600 yards? I mean I could switch uppers, but that wouldn't be so practical if I have it in a panda pack.

So is the mlok different then the mod2 rifles they currently are offering? I don't think I'd be shooting as much over 500 as I'd likely more often be under, so you think I'd be better suited for a 1-4x? I've always been a believer of more is better, not that it always fits. :P

    My .02-

Sounds like youve been there, done that with short stuff. Ever think about breaking away from the mainstream and trying a Rifle gas system?

little bit higher velocity, tiny bit flatter trajectory, lighter recoil, wayyyy less muzzle flash, considerably quieter, etc.

and the biggest advantage of them all- with the gas port father away from the chamber the pressures and temps in the gas system are lower = you will likely never break a bolt. Rifle gas has slower, smoother cycling than 16" or SBR stuff, and it has more reliable extraction because the case has had more time to shrink before extraction. And a properly gassed 20" barrel with A2 or A5 buffer system will reliably run basically any .223 or 5.56 ammo that exists.

Think about it- if you dont already have a rifle in your AR arsenal Id highly recommend it. The last 2 ARs Ive built have been 20" Rifle, and I love it. Kinda hooked, in fact. Granted I dont shoot people in the face indoors for a living- I dont even notice the extra length- my primary application is hunting and range use.

I suggest you start with a 20" or 18" Faxon rifle gassed "gunner" barrel, and add a Vltor A5 lower, and build from there.
