If I was you and wanted a gun for 0-300 yards and 600 yards: I would own a 556 carbine and a 308 bolt action.
I was living in an area that didn't allow me to shoot often(and had a job that I needed to be on call pretty much 24/7) So the only time I got out was for MG shoots, which wasn't much more then blast cars and old appliances. Now that I have a range close and a job where I can get out more I'd like to learn some more about shooting in a more formal sense of the sport.

No such thing as too many rifles. Take both to the class, run both. You'll then have the sbr for up to two hundred yards then the KAC when you want to shoot distance as well as close range. Put a Surefire x300u on the sbr, and a Surefire m300c,or 600u on the KAC.
The KAC comes with a really nice trigger, run it, if you don't like go Geisselle SD-C.
    Your all set.
Guess that is true as well. I've seen a couple people suggest taking two rifles, so that would be good to have both. Now to go research your scope suggestions. Thanks.
