Sounds like you should just sign up for a basic carbine class.

I wouldn't. The guy next to you will probably be running an obnoxiously loud muzzle brake anyway.

Throw it on that MK18 and get a couple of classes under your belt before you start chasing gear based improvements.

A sling. I like a simple two point adjustable.
Something to hold a few extra mags, I'd recommend a simple chest rig.

little bit higher velocity, tiny bit flatter trajectory, lighter recoil, wayyyy less muzzle flash, considerably quieter, etc.

and the biggest advantage of them all- with the gas port father away from the chamber the pressures and temps in the gas system are lower = you will likely never break a bolt. Rifle gas has slower, smoother cycling than 16" or SBR stuff, and it has more reliable extraction because the case has had more time to shrink before extraction. And a properly gassed 20" barrel with A2 or A5 buffer system will reliably run basically any .223 or 5.56 ammo that exists.

Think about it- if you dont already have a rifle in your AR arsenal Id highly recommend it. The last 2 ARs Ive built have been 20" Rifle, and I love it. Kinda hooked, in fact. Granted I dont shoot people in the face indoors for a living- I dont even notice the extra length- my primary application is hunting and range use.

I suggest you start with a 20" or 18" Faxon rifle gassed "gunner" barrel, and add a Vltor A5 lower, and build from there.
Good point. I don't, but I have a 20" on order. Just waiting for it to come in.

I'm not opposed to running the MK18, but am I going to be limited at longer ranges? Same thought with the aimpoint.

As far as the sling, what would you suggest? I've never had a carbine class, not going to lie. So never had the need. Suggests are appreciated.

You dont need to take a class to need a sling. EVERY rifle needs a sling, no matter the application, IMO.

Just like every pistol needs a holster. just like burgers and fries

EDIT- realized I never even aswered your question- my rule of thumb is single point for lightweight 16" or SBR, 2 point for everything else.

Any reputable manufacturers sling is fine, just get one on every carbine you have!

    I currently run a Magpul MS3 on my go-to 6920.

My hunting guns have an assortment of slings. Ive even made adjustable 2 point and single point slings from automotive seatbelts and clips/hardware from the hardware store. the point is, any decent sling will do, just get one on your gun!

A thought on slings and mounts, if the intent is taking "fighting" style carbine courses that require support side shooting (most of the good ones will at some point) the transition from side to side is easier with the single point sling and an ASAP type mount. Def. not impossible to do these drills with a two point sling, but much less awkward with the single point IMO. In my experience, I have also found that most carbine courses now do not go past 100yds and most shooting is 50yds and in unless you seek out a precision or long range oriented course. If planning on shooting at those ranges, that's what the Aimpoint was designed for.

Fair enough. I honestly don't have slings on anything. Hence the questions.

Ok. I'll look into the slings. I figure most of the classes won't be past 100 yards, but let's be honest, if the pandas ever do run out of bamboo, we wouldn't be limited to 50-100 yards. So why not train for that? I mean, I honestly can say I'll never be kicking in doors(where a good red dot is the best option) but at the same time I likely will never be shooting at anything but paper and steel past 100 yards. I have some nice clone rifles, but for a carbine class rifle and maybe some shooting events what would you choose? I went with a friend to a zombie shoot that had some targets out to 300 yards, would you be comfortable with just an aimpoint?

These are things a training class will tell you.

    Hint, no.

With red dots at distance the limiting factor will likely be your eyesight and the size of the dot in your sight (i.e. 4 moa, 2 moa etc.), as the larger dots will obviously cover more of your target at distance. You may need to determine your ability to acquire a target at distance without magnification, I personally am good for man size hits on a FBI QIT target with just my Aimpoint PRO out to 150yds. I think you mentioned you already have an Aimpoint, if so get out to the farthest range available to you and test your capabilities.

If I know I will be shooting past that 150 mark I will take my rifle equipped with the Leupold 1.5-5. Although I primarily use it as my long distance gun, it is also effective for me for all but the very close stuff, 10yds and in.

So, the long winded answer to your question is no I am not comfortable with just the Aimpoint out to 300, but you may be. If your are looking for the most versatility, perhaps a variable power optic would be your best bet.

Sounds like you have plenty enough gun for a carbine class. MK18 with an AimPoint is about ideal for the overwhelming majority of carbine classes.
Blue Force Gear Vickers 2 point slings are pretty well received by most users.

Now if your fishing for an excuse to justify another purchase a DDV11Pro with a 1x6 VCOG will push a 5.56 out past 600 yards.
