This came out of a US small arms conference last year. Rather than an recoil counter system, this is a stabilization system that practically eliminates shooter-induced wobble. Not the most practical for a general issue rifle, but I could certainly see it working its way into marksman roles.

It's also a prototype proof of concept...

If they ever actually wanted to field something like this, I imagine it would look significantly different.

Honestly think of one thing other then lighter material or new attachment systems that you think is truly innovative.
I've often found myself thinking this. As a mid-30something, my peers and I grew up with tech that was progressing from goofy to very nearly sci-fi at a dramatic rate, and it still is
albeit with a bit more refinement than innovation now. To us/me, this stuff is all pretty archaic.
It works, no doubt, and it's tested and true and we all understand why professionals are loathe to fiddle with newfangle stuff.
But still, big yawn at most of it. There have been no "game changers" that I can see looking at history since relatively light
semi/full auto's came along ages ago. Even NV stuff, it's smaller, cheaper, works better, but it's' been around for ages.
It's just been refining, which is cool and I'm glad for it, but it's still burning some ancient powder and tossing a little piece
of metal down a tube. I'm not unappreciative of the progress and improvements, but they don't match up pace-wise with
    many other technical endeavors imo.

In short, give me my freaking phased plasma rifle.

    This.

Most of the "cutting edge" is a joke. Guns are nothing more, nothing less, than fancy rock-throwing.

Call me when there's a shoulder-fired railgun or shoulder-fired DEWs.

I'm not gonna lie, that looks scary (albeit cool, and yes I absolutely want one).
The Left/Demoncrats/gungrabbers are going to flip the f___ out when this comes along. Hell, there's already freaking out about 3D printers.
RKBA includes Directed Energy. They're arms, after all.
