    First AR buy/build

I'm helping a buddy get his first AR.

Say 900 budget what is the ideal rifle at this dollar figure
    16in mid length.
    Nothing special needed.

Not opposed to building either I have the tools. Just haven't sourced parts in ages so I'm out of the know these days.

well for $900 you cant beat the new colt LE6920MPS

in fact, if you do not have a receiver on hand/just looking for an upper, this is still the best way to go. buy the colt, pull the bcg and sell the upper. get a bcm mid length of your choice.

mid length over carbine is over rated, at this price point the single most important thing is quality. you will not be able to match the quality of a colt for the money without some very serious sale shopping. once you factor in selling the extra bits off the colt you dont want, its still the best value.

you may also look at le6920-oem models which go for about $7-800

I looked at those. Seen some m&p models and a sig m400 for 8. Worth a damn.

Good setup and pretty close to budget. You might save a little money by building the lower. I have that upper and a couple of BCM lowers and it's all good stuff.

    "Mil-spec"

M&P is generally at the very bottom of the "acceptable" list of professional-grade rifles. If you're looking for a rifle that adheres to the Technical Data Package for US military rifles, well...Colt owns the TDP and is the only one that can use it in the manufacture of that weapon.

with out being over anal about it let me rephrase the question.

Does the M&P come with a
    1. milspec sized buffer tube to accept milspec sized stocks
    2. Properly staked bolt carrier gas key
    3. MPI bolt

    etc

I would go with this if trying to meet that budget. It's going to be hard to beat if you need a mid length set up.

    I went through this myself.

Many people recommend what I have seen recommended here: build a lower then add an upper.

I did that twice but since that time I have been completely through my uppers, even changed out barrels. It is necessary to obtain a few tools and headspace gages.

So this is my question: why not build the entire gun?

Message sent from my stupid phone (Samsung) and delayed by US Cellular

    Thumbs up

i'm new to AR's, but this is what worked for me. I got complete upper and a complete lower from PSA (under $500). that leaves $$$$$ for ammo, mags and gear.
