I built my first one from a Anderson stripped lower, Anderson buffer tube kit, spikes lower parts kit, magpie fixed stock (I live in NY) spikes stripped upper, and a 20 inch barrel my dads friend gave me. That thing shoots great. Now I'm working on my second AR. Got a really good deal on a complete Troy upper, and I bought a PSA pictogram lower. I'm going to order a BCM lower parts kit and buffer kit, and the next thing j need is an optic. Looking at the strike eagle, and need a decent mount. But look at Primaryarms.com. I buy most of my stuff from there. And no I'm not affiliated with the site. Good luck man!

M&P is generally at the very bottom of the "acceptable" list of professional-grade rifles. If you're looking for a rifle that adheres to the Technical Data Package for US military rifles, well...Colt owns the TDP and is the only one that can use it in the manufacture of that weapon.
While true, if this guy is only looking to spend 900 on a rifle, I am willing to bet that this is just going to be a range toy and he probably isn't worried about parachuting into a hostile environment or something. For what it sounds like, the M&P would be perfectly acceptable as a choice.

He has a valid point. For a range toy you can't beat the M&P. I see it online go on sale for like $450-500 some times. Use slickguns.com they have a lot of good deals on there. If you watch the rifle section, within no time you'll see something that pops up that you'll like and will be in your price range.

Right. While he's at it, maybe pick up a couple of Hi Point pistols. As range toys, they're probably "perfectly acceptable" too.

Corner-cutting is corner-cutting no matter who's doing it.

Does the M&P come with a
    1. milspec sized buffer tube to accept milspec sized stocks
    2. Properly staked bolt carrier gas key
    3. MPI bolt

    etc
    Barrel metal?

You can't beat the Colt 6920. I had one for years but sold it to pick up a Daniel Defense M4a1. DD makes a great rifle I can't complain.

Smart move, I applaud his ability to process good advice, so many ask and then simply do what they intended to do in the 1st place, despite advice to the contrary
