ALG M-lok rails and type 2 covers

Had someone PM me about the Magpul type 2 covers fitting on the ALG Mlok emr v3 rail after seeing a picture I posted in the AR picture thread. So I figured I would post the info for anyone else who was looking at this combo.

The ALG V3 and V2 Mlok rails have the Mlok slots located at the 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 o'clock positions on the rail. The Magpul type 2 Mlok covers are designed for the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions and extend around the rail so when they are in these positions they leave less of a gap :

I like the feel of these more than the type 1 and didn't care for how the type 1's looked on the EMR. Too much space in between and the type 2's were more like the picatinny rail covers I am used to.

When installing the type 2's in the V3, the covers overlap and dont sit flush to the rail (and dont click into place):

So they have to be trimmed a bit. I used a bench grinder, but you could use almost anything that can cut plastic; a dremel would work or possibly tin snips or something.

If the piece was going to be inbetween 2 others, I trimmed both sides. If it was going to only share one side, I only trimmed one edge. If you wanted to cover the whole rail, you could leave rows 2, 6, and 10 alone and trim both sides of rows 4 and 8. I am using an Arisaka Mlok scout mount and a Magpul Mlok MVG, so I had some that had to be different. I tried to not modify as many as possible.

I wasnt going for perfect lines or to make it look factory, just to make them fit. If you wanted to, you could get them perfectly even. Here they are installed:

Not rocket science, I know, but hopefully this will help somebody make it work, or save someone who doesnt want to do this the hassle and money of buying the covers and finding out they wont work.

I had a similar experience with a Kinetics Development Group rail. Type 2 covers won't fit flush. Type 1 covers work but I don't much care for them. I hadn't gotten around to attempting to trim the type 2 covers (too much time shoveling snow here in the mid-Atlantic last weekend), but what you've done is what I was thinking of trying.

Nice job, and thanks for showing the way!

This is good to know as I am looking at this rail, looks like they need to come out with a type 1.5 cover, the type 2 looks to bulk it up quite a bit.

I put the type 2s at the 2 and 6 positions and type 1s at the 4 and 8 positions. It fits perfectly that way.

In the spirit of this thread; an ALG V1 with Magpul Type 2's all the way around. They properly snap into the top slots tightly with zero play, just not perfectly flush.

A little bit, IMO just the right amount.
