(I did NOT modify the 1913 guns; but the tiny knife-edge front sight and shallow U notch rears on them are a caution!) Personally I find the beaver-butt grip safety on the new guns annoying and unsightly, but impractical to change to old style.

Alvin York never complained about his 1911.
I'll bet he complained at every slide lock...

Per the OP, as others have mentioned the sights don't hold a candle to modern versions, which given the nature of a carry gun is an issue, like it or not. The beaver tail, depending on the shooter, may or may not be an issue. Myself personally, I like to get high up on the gun so I prefer the extended tail. A full size is heavy. I have a carry version that is smaller and has an alloy frame, so I prefer that to my full sized, all steel. It has significantly more recoil.

Those are my experience with 1911 carry. Weight, grip, and recoil are possible to put in the preference category, but for me, sight upgrade is a must.

I like full size 1911's. I prefer beavertails, because I got meaty paws. I could and have in the past also ran a 1911 with a commander hammer and a modified standard grip safety. I actually would like to mess with that sort of a set up again in the future. Specifically for carry. Newer style sights are IMHO a must have.

I have a "Second Generation" SIG GSR XO, a Nighthawk Custom Talon II (where I literally specced pretty much every individual component), and a Colt Series 70 Stainless. All three are excellent, and are used for carry, IDPA, and home defense. I have absolutely no qualms in using and/or carrying my Colt Series 70, as 1) I don't get bitten by the grip safety/hammer/slide; 2) The Colt "dimple" to the barrel feed rmp provides across-the-board reliability with both ball and hollow point bullets; 3) the sights are very usable, with a .125 front married to a .125 rear notch-while I prefer a thinner front/wider rear notch, the OEM Colt combination works just fine; and 4) The lack of any magwell beveling/chutes doesn't seem to have any unduly adverse effect on my reloads. While I may upgrade the grips (still up in the air on that), the OEM double-diamond rosewood grips are attractive and functional, as is the bald frontstrap.

    Best, Jon

I use either Colt factory 7 round mags, 7 round Mecgar mags, or flush fit CMC 8rd. Power mags, and it's never given me any trouble. About every three years, I replace the recoil spring with a new Wolff 16lb spring, change the firing pin spring, and check extractor tension. I am thinking about retiring it in a few weeks when my tax-refund arrives and going with a new Springfield Mil-spec, or something similar, with easier to see sights. My eyes are not getting any younger.
Well my tax refund came.............and went...........wife/kids had other idea's with how to spend it, but I did pick up a new Rock Island GI full size 1911. Put NOS WW2 plastic grips on it, broke it in, and retired the Remington Rand to the safe. Had a ton of accumulated Cabela's gift cards, and with what little $$ I was "allowed" to have from the tax refund, was able to walk out with the Rock for $250 out of pocket. After the break in period (500+ rounds of my 230 gr. plated RN reloads + assorted factory 230 gr. fmj ammo) I changed the recoil spring it came with to a 18.5lb Wolff spring and it's now in the EDC rotation. I will change the sights eventually...........maybe.

If I didn't have something smaller and lighter I would not hesitate to carry my rather plain Colt .38 Super Auto. But I do have something smaller and lighter....

I will carry my 1911R1 on the farm from time to time. Something to be said about the classic lines of a GI style pistol
