Didn't bother me in the least. I prefer that setup over all the $3K+ customs I've had.
You can spend a fortune on 1911 mods. For me a 1911 needs a good, solid repeatable barrel/frame/slide lockup. A fitted barely bushing is a good thing. Mine have 4# trigger breaks. It needs sights that you can see, for me I like the Harrison retro rear sight(no dots) and a tritium front sight. Never been hammer bit in 30 years so don't need a beavertail safety and prefer a standard thumb safety, don't need ambidextrous safety. Sounds like a lot of folks are more concerned about how cool their gun looks.... for me it's more can I get it out, get it in play, find that front sight, and be able to place a shot where it needs to go in a high stress situation... not be the victim, my family needs me. I can do that with my gun set up like this.....Mike

If you do and it works for you, why care what others think?

Would I feel unarmed with a stock, yet proven reliable 1911? No.

Are there other things that I would prefer to carry? Yes.

    With that, carry on.

I used to carry a government. Not a GI. Had a beavertail. But Close.
As I lost weight I had significant issues with it bunching up my pants and pulling them down below my waist.
Tried an extended thumb safety, cut it down when it kept getting caught on my ever billowing shirt.
Never had bite, but used a beavertail after the hammer kept getting caught on my now cavernous shirt.
Then one day the safety plunger suffered a catastrophic failure. sad me.

Now I'm dead sexy, none of my clothes fit, and I carry a pocket 9. My pants stay up, my wife keeps the 1911, everyone's happy.

No but I've carried a Glock 30SF though and it had the same felt recoil as a 19 and holds 10+1. Not a bad way to go for a concealable .45.

I hear ya, but then a Prius works too, and gets more miles to the gallon. To me the Glock is the Prius of guns. It's for the most part reliable (you could make an argument it's actually more reliable in its world.....no fourth gen fiascos) but it doesn't do anything particularly great, like a Prius its handling is average, it's looks are less then average...it's accuracy is decidedly average. But like the Prius it works. No if I go polymer I go HK.....the Porsche of pistols..

I have a custom that I kept pretty bare bones but added old school 10-8 sights, gold bead, lowered and flared port and checkering with a flat msh.
I was getting bit really bad but I know guys that doesn't happen to. Garthwaite shortened the hammer for me . I've yet to try it, but I think it's days of biting are over.

GI or gov model, but swap sights, polish feed ramp if needed. And would consider trigger job if I did not like it

Real 1911s rattle! Not really, but I believe most of the "1911s are not reliable unless you spend $3k" nonsense comes from trying to make them too tight.

I bought my first 1911 in 1977, and have owned and shot them continuously since then. Often as primary carry, though that was often a commander.

The guys who taught me in the early 70s felt gold cup type work was great for target, but not for serious usage. But the first thing you did with any 1911, surplus or new Colt, was to polish the feed ramp as they nearly always needed it.
