    Hog Hunting: 308 vs 300BLK

My uncle is looking for a sub $1000 rifle (not including optics) for hog hunting.

He says that his Mini 14 is not enough, and wants something that will potentially drop them with one shot.

He's been looking at the DPMS 308 (Gen 1 I believe).

    I was thinking a 16" BCM 300BLK may be a better choice.

    What say ye?

16" BCM 300 BLK would certainly do the trick... also MUCH lighter and handier.

I shoot a lot of piggies in tight brush in South Texas. A 308 in 150gr or larger tends to anchor them much better than 110gr blackout. If he wants em to drop buy 308. If he's got a little bit of pasture 300 will definitely do the trick, he will just have a few runners. No big deal, shoot the SOBs. Texas needs you killing em, period.

Sorry Scooter- thought you were in Texas; no matter, y'all have as big of a pig problem as we do.....smoke em if ya got em!!!

The property is in Mississippi, but the problem is surely as big.

I will be going after them with 62gr Fusion.

If 5.56 isn't enough, 300BlK is going to be a minor upgrade at best, and a step back if he picks the wrong ammo. If he's not buying ideal 5.56 ammo, I'd start there before changing calibers.

6.5 or 6.8 would be a nice middle ground for hogs.

My experience with 6.5 Grendel is that it drops piggies in their tracks

Ballistics are fun to discuss, but honestly, you don't need a heavy caliber to kill them.

I've killed two with a .17 cal HMR - both head shots.

One didn't weigh more than 80lbs.

The other went 200lbs or more.

To be fair, one shot was 35-50 yds and the other almost point blank.

    They both dropped like stones.
