Way back when I posted in the Froglube thread about how you can freeze it solid in a few hours in a standard home freezer and got jumped by the fan boys.

Only thing I ever liked about it was the smell. I've done the wonder lube thing, trying out all the fancy new flavors, but have went full circle right back to Slip EWL.

Same thing here. Your story sounds exactly like mine. I've wasted so much money and bought so many damned gun lubes it's unbelievable. No more messing around, I'm sticking with EWL because I know for a fact it works and I like sure things.

just wanted to add my experience to the pile. My experience is generally similar to most accounts already articulated. I started with Slip EWL (came with bcm rig) and, because I was new to ARs right when froglube hit the market, I was a good candidate to be drawn in by the hype. However, I was extremely disappointed with froglube and went back to Slip EWL. I have since run many rounds through hand guns and AR's, all lubed with Slip EWL. I love the stuff and do not plan on changing. Slip EWL remains slick and never gums up, no matter the circumstances or amount of time elapsed (granted, I live in the south, but still, froglube couldn't pull it). For the most part, I am able clean my gear without the need for scrubbing or solvents. I just use a micro fiber towel and more slip EWL and I am able to remove 500+ rounds of buildup with ease. Slip EWL tends to stay wet and stay in place. Also, if I have a need for a more viscous lube, I always have a tube of Slip EWL 30 on hand. Great stuff. I usually douse some EWL on the bolt and then wipe a bit of EWL 30 on the rails of the carrier and gas key and im good to go. I put a thin coat of regular EWL on most internal parts and have never noticed any rust on anything (and it gets quite humid around here). Its not some miracle lube, but it works 100% and is highly predictable. I like that.

    I use Slip 2000 EWL. I'm a fan.

I used Frog Lube when it was all the rage. I never had any problems with it, even in 13° F weather. I never "heated up" any of my weapons before using the FL. And I never doused my pistol rails or BCGS with it. Always just applied a light coating with my index finger.

In a pinch, it'll work as a personal lubricant too.

When I was using FIREClean, I found that less was more. which is to say, if I just used a slight "film", it was easier to clean by far, as there was less "muck" in the weapon, and that slight film didn't dry out from shooting, either, really.

What about with SLIP EWL/EWL 30? Is the same "barely wet sheen" still good to go? it would seem to be based on SLIP's page:
Even when surface is wiped dry to the touch Slip 2000 EWL is still present and lubricating the metal parts from within the pores of the weapon.
Stuff like that is also what made me wonder if it was similar chemically to Froglube or FIREClean, regarding the vegetable oil thing. If I replaced "SLIP 2000 EWL" in the above quote with FIREClean or Froglube, I promise you that noone would have called me out on it, and if I had said "I prefer FIREClean/Froglube because it doesn't have to be run wet..." and then posted that quote, it would be harangued as complete bullshit.

I guess part of this post is about pointing out how emotional this topic can be, as well as asking about how much of the product to use to equate to my Fireclean experience (which was EXCELLENT until storage occurred...)

I tend to subscribe to the "More is more" theory. I do not clean nearly as much as I shoot. I tend to shoot, re-wet and put away. Next time out I do the same. I keep my guns really wet. Never once had an issue. I went to a 3 day class with Rob Leatham and LAV. About 1500 rounds in 3 days. Never cleaned once. Just kept it wet and drove on. Not one hiccup. I was shooting an M&P CORE. Not one of LAV's favorites. Even he made a comment about how well it ran. Something about I was lucky enough that I should have bought a lottery ticket. :-) Idk if it was the SLIP, but it sure didn't hurt any.

What are the practical differences between the Gun Lube and EWL?

I tend to use enough to leave a visible oil film on the surface. Not trying to go overboard, but I put some drops here and there and don't wipe them off. I have not had any problems doing this. When I first stopped using SLIP it was because a rifle stored in the safe would lose all that oil (I assume into or out of the buffer tube) and look not quite dry in a few weeks. When "not quite dry" they would still work fine for me, but I would generally add a few drops before a competition or other big shooting session just for good measure. I haven't extensively tested how it performs when almost dry.

I've used both side by side and haven't found much. The EWL seems like it might be a tiny bit slicker and last a bit longer, but I could be imagining that. SLIP's major claim is greater wear resistance with EWL, and for that claim alone I would probably buy just the EWL going forward.
