This all started with a Fortis Rev II handguard I had bought to put on a Colt OEM2 I planned to do as a project, but after not being able to find a price I liked for one and having a spare lower available, I decided to just go with a BCM 16" lightweight midlength upper. The intended purpose was to have a legit second rifle that could be feasibly seen as a go to rifle, though that base has already been covered. More so, I also just wanted another AR.
Given the fact that this upper had an FSB, I decided to try my hand for the first time at re shaping it into a low profile gas block, but that didn't go so well. I wasn't pleased with the end result, so I just went the standard set screw low pro route. Works fine and BCM uses them on their factory rifles and uppers without pinning them so I see no issues here. After cutting off the delta ring and removing the springs and the retainer, I installed the Rev II, though it took some tweaking to get it to line up straight. It kept wanting to cant upward. Now that it's on its rock solid and with a mod 3 vfg and some MI rail panels, fits great in my hand.
Being that this was supposed to be a backup to my go to rifle, I needed a optic and a white light. I had originally intended to go with an EXPS 2 and a G33, but then the lawsuit deal started. Next option was the Trijicon MRO, but after reading mixed reports on its reliability and seeing the fisheye people complained about in person, I decided that Aimpoint was the way to go yet again. I had thought about going with an Aimpoint Micro for my first rifle, but wanted lens covers so I went with the Comp M4, which has been a great optic, but is a tad heavy. So this time around, not being concerned with lens covers anymore, the H1 was a no brainier. Got a good deal through a friend with the factory LRP mount and spacer, so went with that. Once I got it, everything people said about them was confirmed and the only thing I was left wondering is why I didn't get one sooner.
The light was also a no brainier. The Surefire M300 was the only way to go. I have one on my other rifle on a Thorntail mount and wanted to try the SR07 on the top rail for ambidextrous operation, so that's the route I went.
Buis were going to be YHM QDS, but I didn't care for the spring actuation on them so I decided to pick up a MBUS pro front sight to go with the rear one I already had.
All in all I am very pleased with this rifle and cannot wait to try it out in a class this year. From PMC bronze, IMI XM193, Wolf Gold, and Federal/American Eagle .223, it has been utterly reliable.
