    1911 and Modern Day

I get into this conversation on a regular basis about the pros and cons of carrying a 1911.

I will admit some of the reasons are a little weak in carrying the 1911.

The history and the looks of the 1911. It takes fitting and steel to make such a work of art. Plastic is cheap and easy to put in a mold. The pistol has a history and time line like no other.

But other reasons really support carrying much better. Its thin, carries well, it has a great trigger and I can hit very well with it.

It does however take training and maintenance. This is not a "lawn mower" pistol.

Carry two spare mags and life is good.

Why do you carry a 1911 or why not?

Still a good thing or do current events dictate a higher capacity pistol for carry?

I don't own one anymore because of constant issues with reliability. Granted, I bought "off the shelf" but I thought spending nearly $1,000 was enough to get a good one. I ran it side-by-side with my (then) $500 Glock and the Glock worked every time. The 1911 malfunctioned just enough times to make me not trust it.

A person shouldn't have to spend $2,000+ on a gun to get one that works.

I have two 5" 1911's that are every bit as reliable as my Glocks. They are not "off the shelf stock" anymore, but they're far from $2K pistols. They carry well and I have greater practical accuracy with them at speed. Being single stacks, they don't reload as quickly as a Glock, but that's a secondary concern.

They're not for everyone, but they're far from obsolete.

I carry a Loaded Springfield both off and on duty. Gun shoots great for me, I feel more comfortable with it then any other gun, even though I do own and sometimes carry a Glock. That being said, it does require more care then a Glock or other newer system. But then so do cars.....

For me, I have yet to find something that I can shoot as fast and as accurate. Plus I just like the gun. Which is something that I feel gets lost in today's world of everything having to be super duper tactical and if you don't carry X or Y type of handgun, you might as well get a born to lose tattoo on your forehead.

The nuances of the 1911 are pretty well common knowledge in today's world. It is not for everyone, but then neither is Glock, M&P's, etc. Sure, the gun needs a little bit more "fussing over" than the more modern designs, but that is part of the trade off's. But I am one of the weird ones that actually like cleaning and maintaining my guns, it's somewhat medicinal for me.

I also must be truly blessed since my 1911's have been as reliable as anything else I have ever owned and carried, and none of them are 2K guns, but admittedly they were more than a Glock or 2 or 3......

1911's are fun. classic. Every 'gun' guy should have one. There are people who love them, the "carry one daily" and "mine's reliable" crowd.....but, you want a real defensive fighting pistol get a glock 19, 17, sig p32O. CZ, VP9, .... a quality hi cap pistol if that's what you really want.

Subjective question really. One that can only be determined by the individual. While I firmly believe there is no downside to high capacity, there is not whole lot of definitive proof that capacity alone is the determining factor in survival of defensive encounter. Generally speaking capability trumps capacity.

For me, a J-frame could really cover pretty much all my CCW needs. So a 1911 is really a step up, but I am not HSLD dude or pretend to be so..............

    1911 and Modern Day

I too love my 1911's and think they are just as relevant today as they were 100 years ago. However, they need to be with the right owner. People are inherently lazy and want things done yesterday and don't want to take time working on things. I know I'm generalizing but it's also a matter of convenience for a lot of people. We can pick up any latest and greatest from Glock, S&W, H&K, ect and the guns are generally reliable out of the box and need little maintenance for the average shooter and any work they might need are usually drop in parts that anyone can do.

Now take a 1911, it requires a little more knowledge and understanding of what's occurring and most parts require fitting and adjustment. Most people don't want to spend time tinkering or messing with it or even worse, pay someone to fix an issue and would rather spend time putting rounds down range.

Like AR's, there are 1911's from "the list" to buy and avoid and find that the modern day 1911 is extremely reliable with the right owner.

From a CC standpoint, we all have different requirements but for the average person I do not think the magazine capacity is limiting, especially if one carries an extra mag.

I agree with this as well.

Yeah pretty much here too. I'm not HSLD. Medium speed, plenty of drag. I have a good deal of formal training, and have done armorers courses for some of the modern platforms. But I don't need low maintenance guns, because I'm not maintaining 5000 of them. I don't need least cost, because it's not taxpayer dime. I don't need something that'll survive a pack of German Shepherds chewing on it. I spend the money and get some nice stuff and they'll work for pretty much every use case I need. I'm not with the 8th Marines in Fallujah or anything. So I can choose to be a little more...picky about what I like. And I make a decent amount of money so I spend it on over priced 1911's that yeah, could be more cheaply replaced with Glock/Sig/HK (all of which I own and most of which stay in the safe except for specific times). Mostly, it's kind of a place for me where fun and practical can intersect a bit. Why does a dog lick its balls?
